Forum members may be interested in this short account of Farnley Camp (link below), in the grounds of Farnley Hall, to the North of Otley in Yorkshire.

Although the site had been a military camp 1914-1918, 45th tank brigade were reduced to sleeping under canvas in March 1940, the entire camp apparatus having been sold off years previously.

Subsequent occupation by 9th RTR and 11th Tank Brigade is documented, the camp infrastructure greatly improving by late 1942.

227th Brigade, 15th (Scottish) Div. were memorable occupants - 'worse than the Germans.'

Errata: not 45th Tank Brigade - 45th RTR of 24 Tank Brigade.

Canadians of 6th CIRU - returning to camp from Ilkley via Burley after a night out, the driver (though warned by his superior) was driving too fast at 40 mph in the blackout (permitted lights showing).

They failed to negotiate (or presumably even see) the corner at the Malt Shovel pub and crashed into fronting properties. Mrs Brown of Main Street reported 'there was a crash like an explosion' and the Mr Brear commented 'it was a terrific bump, but we have had so many strange noises lately that this bump appeared only somewhat louder than usual'.

Residents rushed to help, extricating casualties from the wreckage. One Canadian staggered to the other side of the road before collapsing dead. Cause of death given by Court of Inquiry at Farnley Camp given as 'fracture of the skull as a result of being thrown against the stone face of a house'.

Col. W.E. Morgan o/c 6th CIRU was stellenbosched and returned to Canada later in November, though not because of this incident.
