I'm no fan of the forum view as first point of entry either. List of recently added-to threads suits me.

All forum software at least has a 'New posts' button, which is essentially what feeds our current portal.
Jeff sent an Invision front page of another place last night, which gives good grounds to believe we can build a portal-esque front end.

    We'll see, chaps.
I definitely hear you on the Portal.
And remember... I've got Owen breathing down my neck too (though he seems worryingly chirpy about the whole business; lulling me into a false sense of security no doubt.)

    WE HAVE BLAST-OFF !!!
This message just posted on ww2f by the big man himself:
(Remember folks..... we are talking about ww2f & not this forum)

    The time has come.

I'm sure you've all heard me bandying about the migration from the current vB to IPB. We've been testing and testing the process on a live server ensuring everything goes smoothly. I even went to far as to bring in a specialist who worked for Invision to perform the more technical details. The troops are trained, the tanks are fueled, and the pilots are on active alert at their airfields.

It is very difficult to predict the exact hour when we will get rolling, but we are going to start sometime on Thursday, March 7th, and the entire process may take until early Saturday March 9th, all like are CST (GMT - 06:00). This will require us to copy the WW2F DB and begin the import to a new system. The entire site will be frozen, backed up, and imported into the new software.

What does this mean to you?
At some point between Thursday, March 7th, & until early Saturday March 9th, all like are CST (GMT - 06:00) the site will be locked and you will not be able to post.

    What should you do instead?
Please refrain from any wailing and gnashing of teeth. An astute colleague of mine mentioned to me the 7th is World book day. Go read one. :)

I always thought Von P owned this site?
Didn't realise it belongs to Otto. I equally
dont know what difference there is between
the two sites. The things you learn...

That pic's a remarkably close resemblance to my shed yesterday - bits of pooter all over the shop there was. All fixed now... except for 500G of sodding hard drive.
    Ah well.

    Do keep up, AHD.
Otto had owned WW2F for a long while, and bought us c.2007 for a couple of hundred dollars (we'd bobbed about for a while from owner to owner, and there was a good chance we'd be flushed by the last chap as we got bundled in with a job lot and weren't his thing).
I'd been reasonably matey with him on WW2F, & he promised he'd leave us to run this place as we see fit in order to retain/rebuild it's... ahem... 'flavour' - & he's stuck to that - never interfered in any way.

So we're something of a front for a sinister owner based in the US.
But it's OK really, 'cos he's actually a Canadian.

Two forums, owned by one bloke, under different 'regimes'.
(And before anyone asks, as they tend to when it comes up; No, we're never going to merge WW2T & WW2F... It'd be a bloody car crash. We'll just stay friends and not shack up together. )

There are some other nationalities thrown in there for good measure, but thankfully no Limey.:p
His dear wife is not a Canadian, so we know where he'll throw his lot when the fan is hit.

Can the mil drab shades of green be retained? I don't like the standard invisionzone blue / gray.

I'm hoping we can hang onto the same colour scheme too.
Just to stop people walking into doors and curb the constant cries of 'where am I?'.

Hmmm, we must have a sort of corporate identity.
    Who knew!

Most things should be adjustable re. look/layout within the bounds of it still being a forum.
Don't be surprised if we might look a bit strange for a while as we sort it. But we'll get there.

Now wouldn't a proper Links section or something be nice?
    Maybe even a working gallery?

    You never know.

Do you know if there be a straightforward migration of all the information on the present site to the new one, please?
    YES.

ww2f.com LOST all the picture galleries (ie Ron Goldsteins, bless his heart!) which Otto had religiously saved. (Bless his heart!) All that returns - so expect bonus items like seeing missing pics re-appear in ancient posts.

Secondly - moderators will be able to merge identical threads, snip and paste replies in the wrong thread to where they belong, retitle threads, fix broken urls, pics etc etc.

Thirdly all the skins that were lost with the last forum are back. Bonus: way, way better.

Should make for a much nicer go around for all.

ww2f.com is down right this minute.
New and vastly improved should appear in a day or so. Whoopie! [IMG]

I must say that was the very first thought that passed through my mind. I loves the green scheme! It's very cosy and home-like for me. Perhaps a bit old fashioned, but don't we love that here. Von Poop, I think you are quite right in thoughts about perpetuating a look and feel for the place. That's my subtle way of saying don't change it too much ... :p

I'm a member of a forum (which will go unnamed) where you can choose the skin of your choice submitted by members. Can you imagine the possibilities here.

Otherwise I'm not very good with change ...

    Regards ...

One big change looks to be a much more comprehensive notifications system.
Hopefully that'll bring other areas than the forum itself into handier use.
