Does anyone know what port city in France troops returning to the US would have left from? My father's notes indicated that he left from Mans, but I can't locate such a city. Whenever I search "Mans," the only place I get is "Le Mans."
    Thanks

My father departed France in late April 1945 on a troop ship out of LeHarve, France. Most of the US troops were taken to the Cigarette Camps located in the area around LeHarve. Dad was liberated from Ettringen, Germany taken to Camp Lucky Strike. He was given medical treatment for wounds and malnutrition and some mild frostbite from sleeping on the wet frozen ground. Once he recovered he stood guard over German POW. Then he took that big boat home
When I was researching troop crossing to the ETO, and back to the US it seemed that may of the ships left Leharve. The Cigarette Camps were all around this area and used to process the troops for possible departure to the Pacific. They were given Points. If you had enough points you went home, if not you stayed for that Ship to the Pacific. Here is a link to the Cigarette Camps. The Cigarette Camps: U. S. Army Camps in the LeHavre Area -- Camp Lucky Strike
