Just to add you don't need death certificates as a proof of death.

Anything like Undertakers invoice, photo of grave etc. will suffice.
That must be new Drew. I applied for my dad's records about 8 months ago and they required an original death certificate. It's easier now then. Do you know about the spouses' requirements for proof of death now?

The bulk of his time was with No.314 Supply and Transport Column.

The HQ assignments were short attachments from No.314 hence the @ or (a) in the reason column.

What you have described as real is actually Rear HQ 2 TAF

His trade was more correctly called Driver, Mechanical Transport rather than Motor Transport but it means the same thing.

He was mustered as a driver and remained in that trade from enlistment to demob.

You have been pointed to the National Archives in a number of posts for details of what the unit was doing and where and I repeat the advice with the link to No.314 Supply and Transport Column ORB

Some terrible hand writing it looks to me that the first date for 314 S & T could be 14 2 44 ??? I have located 314 in july 1944, they were near a place called SONNING. Along with many units there location was just a field where they set up base until moving to another location or embarkation,; In this case it is beside the main A4 trunk road and by looking at the houses in the area on Google street view only the row of houses to the north existed at that time. Its wartime map reference was Q.215953 which converts to those in the atttachments. getting the relevant bits of the file from TNA may give you lots of answers we cannot provide.

    Good Look

    Thank you Ted

I'm glad to be directed along the way and will proceed to the TNA - only one little problem - I don't know what the TNA is.

I don't understand " map reference # which converts to those in the attachments".

Please explain to this thick headed girl

Thank you for the war time map. It was kind of you to post that for me.

    Best wishes

    Hi,
I am new to the forum and stumbled across this post as it starts very much like my search. I too am looking into my Grandads RAF service as well as my Nans WAAF.
I was wondering if anyone managed to help with the information that you searched for?

My Grandads service records very similar to Chrissie's Grandad's as he too was a Driver (Fordson WOT1)

    Euston 6.7.42
    Euston Res. 7.7.42
    Res. 2R.C 1.9.42
    28/2/42 12 O.T.U Chipping Ward HH 22.10.42 188/42
    23/10/42 12 S of TT 10/12/42
    6/8/43 STN.Mount Batten HH 25.3.43
    16/7/43 41 A.S.R. @ 1.12.43
    / Mount Batten 15.2.44 23/44
    23/44 314 S&T Column X 16.2.44
    9/45 Disembark BLA 22.3.45
    9/45 Disembark BLA 23.10.45
    10/45 HQ (W) 2Grp @ 31.3.45
    314 S&T Col 4.6.45 22/45
    22/45 2002 AD Wing @ 4.6.45
    314 S&T Col
    40/46 73 MTLRU X 30.6.46 52/46
    64/46 53 M.F.H X 31.8.46 48/46
    64/46 101 P.D.C 14.12.46

Not sure that all the Dept.P.O.R are correct as they are hard to read. I have a few question though.
1.) I can not find any reference to 41 A.S.R at RAF Mount Batten? could this be a typo and should it be 43 ASR?
2.) 314 S&Tcolumn, does anyone have the movement/unit records for this period
3.) Disembark BLA 22.3.45 would this be the actual date of him first landing in europe as i see that it is listed twice?

Thank you to anyone that can help, I have been trying to put together a complete picture on and off for years but know have the time to finish the work i started.

    Hi Jason and welcome.

Not sure I can help much but BLA usually means British Liberation Army, so "disembarked BLA 22.3.45" is probably your granddad moving to the Continent.

Can you post scans of the service records? As you know, they can be hard to decipher but seeing them will help other members to help you.

Cheers and good luck with your search

    Hi Ian,
    Thanks for the reply,
Here is a transcript of his service record. Any help would be appreciated. I have sciured the web but do not seem to get many if any hits from the various units even using the correct unit name instead of the abbreviations.

    Thanks again,
    Jason
