My dad was in the 56th recce. Ernest Illingworth Army no 10602197. Just got his army history. He was in North Africa November 1942 to July 1944. Served in Italy August 1944 to January 1946. Transferred to NIH-Irish Horse sometime around Nov 1945. Has anyone any old photos of 56 recce? Does anyone know where he would have done his training from enlisting in January 1942? Any info would be very welcome. Lovely informative site! Lesley

Just uploaded photos of 56 recce in north africa. Can someone tell me if they are ok?! Not very good with computers! Thanks Lesley
Hi Lesley, can't see anything attached to your post. Try looking at the posting instructions again: http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/network-information/12816-how-insert-pictures-into-your-posts.html It might be as simple as you didn't 'upload' the images. Good luck, Mike
Quite right Lesley, they can be seen there! You could try and attach them to another post or edit your previous to include them however anyone looking for them should be able to find them on your profile. Nice photos by the way! Mike
Lesley have resized the photos. Maybe someone can identify some of the people present in the group photos. Cheers Paul
Hi folks, I am new to this site and still trying to find my way around so please bear with me. My interest is the 56th Reconnaissance Regiment where my father served from Glasgow through to Austria. He was Sergeant Gilbert F Anthony, 15 Troop, C Squadron, he was awarded a MID in North Africa [note his initials are incorrectly stated in "This Band of Brothers"]. The recent photos from Lesley have prompted my first post and I think the following may be of interest. The group photo is 56 Recce, 15 Troop, C Squadron, it also appeared in the Regiments’ Spring newsletter with the caption that Bert Crutch was 3rd from right, back row. In the following edition my father wrote:- “I have a copy of this photo which was taken at Adrano, Sicily, on 22nd August 1943 just after the town had been taken and the Troop were resting in an almond and olive grove. As for naming the lads, I for one am on the far left with my hands on the shoulders of Sid Hutchinson. Sgt. Thomas is 4th from the left in the back row while Tpr. Scott is just below Sgt. Thomas by his right arm. Also Sgt. May is sitting down in the front row 3rd from the left and, of course, Norman Sarsfield and Jack Lovell are in the centre” I will look through subsequent newsletters to see if any others were identified. My copy of the photo may be slightly better quality so if all goes well I have attached it along with another showing six 56th Recce Sergeants taken in Dundee, Sept 1942 - my father is back left and Bert Crutch is front right. Others (position unknown) are Sergeants Lightfoot, Law, Carter & Thornton. Hope this works !
Tony welcome to the forum. Its great that some of the people in the group photo are identified. My father was also with 56 Recce. Can you post more information on your father. Cheers Paul
Hi Tony What a shock to see the same photo as mine! My dad Ernest Illingworth is sitting in the 2nd row, 2nd from right. Any more photos would be great. Lesley
