England, worth fighting for?

I do not seek to aportion blame; I merely made a social observation. The causes of our current demography are complex and varied, and open to debate, but I think it falls outside the scope of these forums.
    Agreed mate.
    As I said.
    Rant Ends.
(And I really do think 'Jerusalem' would make a better National Anthem than the one we've got, now there's a tune to bind people together.)

And I still hope I would have the spiritual and mental courage to fight for my country In a just cause regardless of the situation at home.
    :)

Having read all the messages in this thread, I feel it has gone slightly off track.
I do feel that this country has declined in the years but the question was
    is England worth fighting for?
    My answer is YES
for the rights of my daughters to grow up free from tyranny, free to say what they like (within the laws of this land), free to worship, and free to remember the sacrifices made by men and women the same age as they in order that they can.

I am proud to be English

Now that. I would agree, Is PC balls of the worst order. I put 'English' on everything.

And Adam, The significant point is that 99.99% of the people from 'other' communities I know also abhor and despise the kind of 'squeaky wheel' special treatment that ranting fundamentalists and loony councillors demand, they use the same language as you do about it. They on the whole just want to get on with it, trying to be positive rather than constantly looking for someone to blame. In many ways the more traditional 'asian' families are astonishingly 'British' in their outlook in a rather charmingly old fashioned way. They understand tradition and respect more than the chavvy losers that hang around outside my local shops.

Those Chavs are another symptom of the same disease: political correctness. Mustn't chastise your child, mustn't discipline it, not at home and certainly not at school. It is, apparently, an attempt to infringe their "human rights". As it is when the parents of a 10 year old girl forbid her from wearing a mini skirt to school (recent newspaper case), the child in question saying it was about "freedom of expression" that she chose to wear such a garment! Such skewered thinking leads to the kind of girls I encountered while travelling home by bus from work a few weeks back. I geuss they were around 17 or 18. There were four of them sat on the upper deck's rear seat, and I was sat on one of the seats immediately in front. Every other word was F***K; F***K this; F***K that! And all at the tops of their voices, right in my ear. When I turned round and told them I didn't appreciate the language or the volume, what did I get? A barrage of personal insults, more foul language, told I shouldn't be listening to other people's conversations and to go sit at the front of the bus if I didn't like it! Welcome to the world of the Chav, where there is zero consideration of others; where, indeed, the concept dosen't even exist. Chav children of Chav parents. But the main thing is, no one infringed their personal rights at home or school and taught them respect for others in a disciplined way. Oh, I truly shudder....

I guess a lot of it is to do with where you live in the country too. If you live in the country side and you don't run into to many mosques and you don't grow up hearing "Kill whitey" every 5 minutes, then I guess you don't really see a problem. I feel that past generations were nice enough to accomadate these people, and then suddenly they group together to attack us. Just my opinion. Do with it what you will.

    Hey thanks.
What the hell is going on in Britain?
My mother went last year and will not return as the "face" of the empire has changed.

I think I can say with all honesty that I would fight for my country, which I calss as England but will include the rest of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland as I believe that together we make a proud nation.

I only ask that if we have to fight to defend our country could we make it sooner rather than later..... I'm not getting any younger you know!

What has thus far been posted in this thread brings back memories, from my teenage years, of discussions with my Father and Uncle Frank, both having served in the army during the Great War - Dad saw action in the Dardanelles and elsewhere, Frank until losing his arm at Salonika, cutting short a promising cricketing career - he is still rated as being the best Test umpire ever. Both felt that the England of the '30s was not the one they knew before the war, but neither echoed widely publicised statements such as "England has gone to pot," "The youth of today is not what it used to be," et cetera. Certainly neither felt their service for "King and Country" had been in vain. With Hitler running rampart over Europe, when the call came, the oft criticised young people came forward willingly.

What should be remembered, in both World Wars, while many fought and died for their country, many did so for countries other than their own. Of the many from Éire who served in the North Irish Horse, ten who shall never be forgotten rest forever in foreign soil - especially Harry Jenkins from Glenageary, County Dublin, my driver who was killed when our tank was knocked out in Italy.

To answer the question posed by Cynic - if needs be, and if I were able, I would fight again for England the country of my birth, however, being a British citizen, it would be also for Scotland, Wales and Ulster and be damned proud of it!

Don't worry PP, we'll get you a camo zimmer frame.
Just read back through all of the other postings, and it seems that all of us would fight for our country. For me it's also Queen & Country, but there we are.
I would also fight for every immigrant who came here for a better life, to bring up their children, pay their taxes and just get on with their lives without being a bother to anyone. That was what the last war was about, wasn't it? The freedom to bring up your children?
But i would not fight for the chavs, and the radical preachers, and the liberal politicians. As far as I am concerned they should all A. Be put on the first transport plane out of the country. B. Put on a big ship, taken to the middle of the Atlantic and chucked over or C. Put against a wall and shot.
But i will fight for those who love this country, no matter what colour their skin or which god they worship. If they are British then i will fight for them.
    Cue Jerusalem again.

Simply, yes I would fight to protect Britain if called upon to do so. I am however thinking of joining the RAF after Uni and so it is something I have already thought about. I agree with the comments posted in particular I would agree with your statement Kitty that it doesn't matter who they are (but where they are) if the are British then I would fight for them to protect Britain from however threatens.

I would fight for my Country for a very simple reason. As a veteran once said to me "Freedom is our most precious thing, without freedom we are lost"

If the chips were down and the UK was under threat from an overseas enemy than I believe very few would not fight. I would include you Ccynic in that band as well.
No country is perfect but you cannot choose your enemy. Do you really believe that you would stand aside and watch an enemy such as the German Third Reich walk in? If you did stand aside do you really think that you could sleep at night ever again?

My father was a Conciencious Objecter with good almost unique reasons, but served in the end. With respect, your reasons for not fighting are minor by comparison.

My family has done so since 1680.

It still does. Our family's attitude was that we had a duty to our country, Crown, and ancestors.

When I took my oath to join the US Navy, it included obeying the legitimate orders of my superiors. I did so, knowing that if I was ordered to drop a bomb on London, there was no way I could do it.

Fortunately, it's virtually impossible that the US and Britain will face off in another war. All those issues are settled. The Jay Treaty remains on the books, too. :)

Interesting thread, I thought I would wait a while and get some of the expected comments about the ethnic problems out of the way first. :)

Would I fight? Of course I would, shi**ing myself in the process, of course, but I would still do it.

I stay in Scotland and am proud of that, I am also proud to be a part of Britain and all it stands for. A small Island in the world that has done more than few other countries have over the centuries.

Its a common theme every where that the country is not as it once was, but thats the changing face of the world. I am only 33 and feel like a Dinosaur around the youth of today comparing my views to theirs.

I do agree with some comments over ethnic minorities but not all, many were born and raised here without choice and consider themeselves more Scottish or English that Indian, pakistani or other background and would equally stand and fight for their country along with the rest of us. As one of my friends will tell you, his family might be from Pakistan, but he would be lucky to find it on a map!

The youth of today have been poisoned by things like MTV and stuff like that. I dont know about yall. But I tried on three seperate occasion to enlist and each time I was rejected. It was all due to my heart condition. But even if you cant serve, be proud of your country. No matter where you come from. Im 25yrs old and I consider myself an ardent patriot. I will always support our troops, no matter the situation. So as my rambeling has come to a close. I say God Bless America, God Save The Queen, and God Save Texas.
