    Adam & Phil, I don't understand a word you're on about.
Geoff, crap joke mate but I have emailed Peter Francis at the CWGC as you ask on your search engine home page.

Why not just use a script to pull the data and store it locally? That way any future changes would have a minimal impact on your site. That's what Canada at War is doing with the information the Canadian government is providing, I've seen similar things done with US sites who provide US service records?

Unless it's against the TOS of course.

    Are we an educational establishment?

Great. Hope you did not use the on-line form. It has never worked for me.
Incidentally, your avatar is worse than my joke!

Strange, they updated their website a few days back and I noticed the Fromelles link had gone.

Must admit, I was expecting this to eventually happen......Just glad I did not get very far with my massive update.

Could this be the first step to making us pay to view ? Are they about to sell the database to Ancestry ?

Are you mocking or asking a question? Sorry, tone is hard to translate with text.

If the former, sorry, I've already "disclaimered" in a sense.

If the latter is the case, I don't see why not, it depends on what they deem a educational establishment. Storing it locally and then providing a link to the CWGC should work if the other criteria is met.

    Geoff,
I see the engine's closed now, when it appeared to be working with the inelegant .pdf links this afternoon.

It's an awful shame if this rather arbitrary change by the CWGC has killed one of the most useful tools to be found on the Internet (or anywhere) for those seriously committed to remembrance and research of Commonwealth war dead.

There can be only one reason why they would put a session key in the URL
    It figures...

But then again it is entirely against their Royal Charter. Is that so?

    Sorry. asking a question.
Since I have almost their entire database on a huge pile of CDs

Ah no worries, I apologize as well for jumping to conclusions.

You should get in touch with the CWGC and ask them to explain what "educational institute" means, what the specifications are, if you can attain it, etc. Once that is down I'm sure there are a few people on this forum more than happy to help fill the criteria if it can be.

Really strange T.O.S. these guys have. In Canada the records system we have is open to all who wish to use their data for non profit reasons (although for profit can be attained by getting in touch with them). They only ask that those wanting to reproduce he data link back to them, not try to look official or "affiliated" with the government, and of course assure that you keep the information up to date.

With all these improvements in technology, we'll soon be able to pay for cemetery admittance by credit card before we leave home. Now that's what I call progress !

    Cynical ? Me ?

Not cynical but true, this is the kind of stuff that happens when governments fund things and people, businesses, etc don't pitch in themselves anymore. When it's time to tighten the built...well...you know. =/

Actually, sessions keys can have other uses on the database side, efficiency and security being two of the most notable ones.

Perhaps external requests like those made at the Geoff Search Engine were causing problems for their server hence the decision to change to the session key method?

    Elven,

If anything, the more efficient way of finding data through Geoff's engine would have made for less usage of cwgc server time.

Faster search times do not always translate into the best use of server resources.
