I hope someone can help me with this query. I am trying to find out which regiment my father served in during WW2. He was in the 8th army and served in Italy and Egypt. I have no idea which regiment her was in - and only have a photo showing a sleeve badge. I have attached this here.
I'd be grateful if anyone could point me to info.
I have applied for his service record, but understand this can take some time.

    Thank you.

    Welcome to forum.
    Sorry no real clue there.
He'll be in one of the 'Army Troops' as opposed to in a Division.
As for actually unit, have no idea.

Do you have his army number. Do you know how old he was when volunteered/called up?

I'm going to dig through mum's old photos and see if I can find out any more detailsand post those. He was awarded the Italy star, the Africa star, the 1939-1945 star and the war and defence medals. I think he was a corporal. I remember a photo of him next to a pyramid - but don't seem to still have this in the photo box.
He was in the war for the duration. The photo was taken in 1944.

    MDougan -
there appears to be a divisional sign underneath the 8th Army Crusader badge- can you describe it as it might help - not too many 8th Army regiments fought in Italy most of them went home after Sicily and only a small element of 7th Armoured went on at Salerno to Naples before heading home - leaving both 4th and 7th Armoured bdes in Italy so -IF he also has the Italy Star that would help pin his regiment down

    Cheers

MDougan - just re-read your posting that he was awarded the Italy Star sooooo- it looks like he was in either 4th or 7th Armoured bdes-
    4th Armoured - Royal Scots Greys ( 2nd Dragoons) - 3rd County of London,YEO - 44RTR
    7th Armoured - 2nd - 6th - 8th RTR

any old letters will show his address and Regiment
    Cheers

I was thinking along the lines of a Corps , such as RASC , Sigs etc etc

Is there a sign underneath the 8th army crest? It looks like the edge of the photograph intruding to me.

could be the white edge of the photo - but there is a darker spot just above that which would indicate another symbol

Owen - the corps would be represented by the two colour - 2 inch flash lower down on the arm...? .....blue/red RA - red /yellow RAC..etc

    Cheers

All - thanks for all the info. The photo is not very clear I am afraid and there is no further detail. Unfortunately, the edge cuts off the full image of the badge and any further detail under that.

So, is the shield with the cross on it an 8th army sign?

Tom - "either 4th or 7th Armoured bdes-
    4th Armoured - Royal Scots Greys ( 2nd Dragoons) - 3rd County of London,YEO - 44RTR
    7th Armoured - 2nd - 6th - 8th RTR"

Not sure what all of this means - what is RTR?

I will look for any further letters etc and have applied to the MOD for his record.
