    Hi everyone,
My father was a fitter in 3rd King's Own Hussars and was in Egypt in October 1940, Buq Buq in December '40, around Benghazi in February '41, and withdrawing towards Tobruk in April '41.

I am just beginning to sort about 100 photos which my sister has sent me. They were stored in a metal tin, and when she decanted them to send them to me, she found a paper saying that it was made from the metal of a destroyed German staff car from Tobruk. I guess they are the photos my father sent home and cover all his time abroad.
In order to better understand what they show, and when, can anyone throw light on the following info, all written on the back of photos, which appear to be in a desert setting.

    1. 'British tanks lined up in Egypt-WINGATE' (line of 7 tanks and a truck)
2.'Turk's Dodge' (line or convoy of about a dozen lorries or armoured vehicles)
    3. Nedaywa (4 mechanics and jeepish vehicle)
    4. Katatba (fitters working on an engine)
    5. QU. (lorries and sandstorm) another with a tank and tents.
    6. 'Bogged down in the desert. NEB.' (an open backed truck stuck in sand)
    7. Quassassin approaching sandstorm. (sandstorm and motorbike)

    Thanks.

Only two make sense being # 5 and # 7 was a base depot in Egypt…

    Cheers

Go have a look at the forum's Gallery and consider whether or not it is a suitable place to eventually house your father's photos.

    Best regards

Hi Ron, I will certainly do that eventually. First of all I'm trying to preserve Dad's diary, in a form which makes sense, and which will be accessible for his descendants, who will perhaps not know much about the subject. At the same time I'm educating myself! I'm hoping that regimental diaries will help me to fill in a few of the blanks when there's an illegible section.
I will be pleased, when that is done, to let anyone see it, and to house the photos on this site - which incidentally I find very helpful, as well as fascinating. Some of the photos can be directly tied to passages of text, but quite a lot are simply captioned 'Captured German tanks' or 'wreckage in the desert' with no date or location. Still, I'll be pleased to post them eventually if they would be welcomed.

    Hi Maisie,

Orde Wingate (later to command the Chindits in Burma) was based in Cairo around the summer months of 1941. Perhaps photograph 1 is a reference to him?

    Hi Maisie,
Can't help much, but possible photo 2 could refer to a person (nick) named Turk and his Dodge being a type of truck, but that is a stab in the dark.

Khataba, north west of Cairo, was in Egypt Base.
