  1. So it looks like Lieutenant Sykes was a twin? And he was survived by at least one sibling. That gives me some more info to go on in my search. I've turned up a blank with the Kathleen lead so will try some more with the Edwin one instead.
Again, many thanks for all your help, TD. It would appear that with surviving family, he maybe wasn't a forgotten hero after all. Here's hoping.
    Cheers.

Its easier tracing male lines, females need tracing through marriages with name changes etc. I only tried to find her from family trees, but often creators use their married name for a persons profile rather than their maiden name.

    Good luck

John, I have the war diary for that year. Any chance you could send me a memory stick? It's approx 7Gb. I'd burn it to disc for you but my comp is needing repaired and the other one our son decided to see how many DVDs he could ram into it ha ha.

I see his name at least twice, one mentioning the date he went missing.

  4. Hello amberdog,
Thanks for the offer. That's very generous of you. How do a memory stick to you?

  8. Drew, thanks so much for taking the trouble to send these photos of the war diaries. Fascinating stuff. I've been able to build up a really clear picture of the role the 5th east yorks played and in particular how circumstances led to the death of JLS.
Amazed to find so many people willing to help flesh out a very sketchy initial story.
    Much appreciated.
    J
