    Hi,

I had a relative that was in the 5th Bn E.Yorks Reg, he died just after DDay. I have serached places like Google for info and found nothing excpet that the 5th was part of the TA. I have found a few books about the East Yorkshire Reg 1939-1945, but it may be a while before i can actually buy them.

The man's name was Harry Harman, does anyone have any information about the 5th Bn? Like what beach they landed on in Normandy and basically their war history?

    Thanks alot,

    Kind Regards,

    Robert

You might find my new website of interest:

    http://www.ddayancestors.com/

This is compiled from a 'Normandy Roll of Honour' I compiled some time ago. Details of your man from it:

    Harman, H. L/Cpl 4342693
    Killed 11th June 1944, age 30.
    Buried - Hottot War Cemetery.

I also have war diaries for all the D Day units, and will check to see what I have on them, but they would have come in via Gold Beach on D Day.

Malcolm - this book covers the fighting at Tilly la Campagne, rather than Tilly sur Seulles, where L/Cpl Harman was killed.

For some details on Tilly see my WW2 Battlefields website:

hmm one thing i dont understand is that he is burried in the Hottot-les-Bagues War Cemetery, but if he died in Tilly sur Seulles, why wasn't he burried in teh Tilly-sur-Seulles War Cemetery?

Because that wasn't a cemetery in use during the fighting for Tilly; it was a cemetery that began later in the battleof Normandy, it seems. There were cemeteries in and around Tilly, and Hottot was one location where these graves were moved to after the war. Why they weren't moved to the cemetery in Tilly, I don't know. That cemetery contains graves of men killed at Caumont l'Evente, which is a good 20KM+ away, among other locations moved in there. Often there doesn't appear any reason to it.

I know that the town where I was born (Dendermonde, Belgium) was liberated by the East Yorks of the 50th Division in September 1944, but I that was after the Battle of Normandy, of course....

Looking at previous posts, I've matched H Harman's name and number to a grave I visited with my late grandad Francis E. Smith. I'll check this, but I believe they served in India together. They called him darkie Harman on account of his deep tan!

    Hello Mark,

Robert (Monty) hasn't visited the forum since his last message (above). Have you tried to contact him via the e-mail, etc. addresses he left in his 'contact info'?

If not, click on Monty, scroll down a little and the relevent section should display, then if you click on 'contact info' you will find the information I refer to.

Did your late grandad serve with the East Yorkshire Regiment? If so, was any of this service in the 4th or 5th Battalions?

    Best,

    Steve.

    Hi Steve
Thanks for the tips about contacting Robert. I've emailed, but if he's anything like me, I'll be waiting ages for a reply! My grandad, Frank, was with the 5th East Yorks. I accompanied him on the 60th anniversary commemoration - then returned with him the following year to find his beach and the mates he lost in Normandy. I filmed him in the cemetary at Hottot-les-Bagues. That's why the name Harry Harman jumped out at me. I'm sure Robert would be interested in the footage. Let's wait and see...

    Cheers

    Hi Mark,
I am researching my uncles war service he was in the 5th East Yoorks too (see thread http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/unit-documents/40243-war-diaries.html) I noticed your comments about your granddad and wondered if he may have known my uncle James Shaw. An interesting piece I came across in his personal effects was the Eisenhower address with signatures of what I assume to be his friends.

    Date of Death: 09/07/1944

Regiment/Service: East Yorkshire Regiment, 5th Bn.

I don't know if its the same soldier though!

Thanks Steve another pair of eyes etc. I looked Matthew Rose too but as you say difficult to know if its the same guy. It would be nice if someone recognised them as their relative. I need the war diaries but Andy can't be definite how many pages and what the cost would be, I did get one from him that he happened to have for the 5 E Yorks 1942.

    Hello Graham,

Andy can't foresee how many pages there will be in the War Diary until he's doing the research for you and he has certain fixed costs - hence the reason why he can't quote a specific fee and the cost to you is open ended.

That said, I have used Andy's services to track down the circumstances of an Uncle's death and I was surprised, both, with the extremely positive result and the reasonablness of the charge. What Andy does is, delivered promptly and without any headaches. The cost won't be reasonable to everyone, but will be to most... I recommend the servce he (and Lee) provides.

Let's go to PM (private message) if you wish to discuss further... I do have an idea!!!

    Best,

    Steve.
