Owen - Yes I have seen the posts, nevertheless it would be helpfull if I could get the pages 166 - 168 of the East Lancs Regimental History dealing with this period; or even better the relevant pages from the War Diary. So as to get a better understanding of the Battalion set-up in the area.

If you look at the maps and Google you'll notice that the eastern side of the Reichswald has changed a lot since the war. Big parts of the forest have been turned into agricultural land.

Fortunately, the southern forest edge along the Niers River has not changed - and the Germans trenches will still be there. At this time of the year the Reichswald forest floor is a mess, a complete jungle with much undergrowth (especially ferns). These hide all former positions, so you must be very certain where to look.

Stolpi, The photos are great and with your markup give a good insight to where Donald was killed.

Donald was the uncle of a good friend of mine at work. His family were unaware of how he was killed. This info will give them some idea as to where he was at the time of his death. When I get the war diary I will be able to give the story of his last few weeks before he died.

I cant thank you enough for your help in this. My friends father was on the minesweepers during WWII and through a little research and again help from other members on here I managed to obtain a photo of the minesweeper that his father served on. He was to say the least chuffed.

As always the help that other members give on here is second to none and thanks go out to you all.

    Ed
