    Hello all.

My son went on a school trip today to RAF East Kirby Museum as part of his WW2 topic at school.

This prompted a conversation with the in-laws who told me that a relative (step-mothers mum's cousin) was an Eric Stamp who served in 83 squadron alongside Guy Gibson. Apparently, he was shot down at some time during the war and spent the remainder of the conflict in a Prisoner of War camp until he was liberated in 1945.

Just out of curiosity I thought I'd have a read up on 83 sqn in general and possible POW camps that he could possibly have been interred.
I've searched the forum and what I'm struggling with is finding any existing threads! Using search terms '83 sqn', 'raf 83 squadron' 'stalag' etc and other key words I just get generic returns, seemingly not related to my search enquiry?

My question is, is it just that the threads don't exist (I find this highly unlikely), or am I doing something wrong?

I must stress, I'm not particularly interested in his war diaries, at least not yet, I was just interested in doing some research by myself and seeing where it leads but i am asking after some friendly advice on searching for threads?

    Kind Regards
    Lee

RAFCommands Trained to colour between the lines.

Bomber Command in UK required 2 tours unless pathfinder force, usually these were done with different squadrons.

In this case his first tour was with No.83 Squadron but his second tour was with No.106 Sqn when he was shot down and became PoW

I would not start with looking at threads by search here - to many red herrings will be thrown up like No.83/No.106.

The peg in the sand to start from is No.106 Sqn on Lancaster R5899 lost on 18/19 Sept 1942.

Place to coomence from is TNA ORBs and Casualty File

Sergeant A E Hiscock, Sergeant R Payne: killed; Pilot Officer F S McWhirter, Sergeant G... | The National Archives

No.106 Squadron ORB gives loss and previous ops for the crew
Squadron Number: 106 Records of Events: Y | The National Archives

Squadron Number: 106 Summary of Events: Y | The National Archives

If you sign up for the free account at TNA the two files above are free download.

That should start you off - I hope that others here will respect your desire to move forward from these starting points under your own steam.
