    Hello Patty,

The service number is West Yorksire Regiment and the cap badge in pictures in Messages # 63 et seq also looks like that of the West Yorks, but possibly East Yorks. The arm flash is not clear - is it a Polar Bear? Could you verify please?!

Interestingly, most if not all of the pictures appear post war. The only West Yorks battalion to serve with the 50th (Northumbrian) Division immediately post-war was the 5th Battalion, in 150th Infantry Brigade. I mention this because I believe the arm flash in the middle picture in Message # 63 is the 'TT' of 50 Div - like my avatar. Could you verify please?!

Just because a soldier started in the West Yorks and ended up back in the West Yorks doesn't mean that he didn't serve in another regiment or regiments during WWII. You really do need your father's service records to resolve your query.

    Best,

    Steve.

Addition: In the second picture in Message # 66 - looks like he's in an Armoured outfit by then.

You would have his service records by now if you applied for them back in Feb 2010 when you originally asked and all would be revealed.

    Cheers

The badge is still no clearer Patty, but the shoulder flash is a Polar Bear - 49th (West Riding) Division. Looks like at some time he served in the 49th, 50th and an Armoured Division (outfit).

As Andy, Owen and I have mentioned before, you should apply for his service records; otherwise you will never really know all the answers. You have all the informtion you need on this thread to assist you in doing so.

Post again when you have the service records.

    Best,

    Steve.
