Just got back from a few days around Dunkirk doing some recce work for a forthcoming project, so thought I'd share a few photos. The Wormhoudt massacre memorial, Esquelbecq:
The pond where Capt Allen was shot. His body was never found, and he is believed to still be buried here.
We then moved up to the Dunkirk perimeter. More of that later. Couple of web links relating to the above: Wormhoudt Massacre Site Worcestershire Regiment(29th/36th of Foot) Web site
Great Shots Paul. I believe the Pond was dredged (sp) and the contents helped to make up the mound that the orientation table is placed on. Burt Evans was in the pond too with Capt. Allen but the bullet missed his head and hit him in the neck. Vanpee was executed too prior to the Wormhoult massacre. He was guarding a supply dump and when the Germans turned up he shot one of the SS officers sitting on top of his armoured car whilst they were resting. He was captured and shot. I'm going over again in August this year maily to go to the Blockhouse just outside Cassel and the other massacre site, the farm at La Paradis. Did you visit the museum at Dunkirk? Cheers Andy
Hi Andy - you are right, the pond was dredged and the mound was made from it, so that could be Allen's tomb as well. Do you know if Bert Evans is still alive? Yes, we went to the museum - more of that later.
I think he was still alive around 2006. If memory serves me well he's a member of the British Legion or a Vet (Dunkirk or Warwicks maybe) association in Birmingham. Looking forward to your museum imput Cheers Andy
To continue... we then went up to the Dunkirk Perimeter and had a look at the defence line along the Bruges-Furnes canal. This is a Maginot Line bunker which was defended by 1st Dukes in May 1940.
