My late father was in the RAOC from 1939 and was evacuated from Dunkirk in 1940. From conversation with my late mother she said he set up soup kitchen in a village ?near the dunes to serve retreating soldiers. Might anyone know where/when this was? He was apparently one of the last to leave.
welcome to the forum perhaps if you share his name it might help forum members help you further also you need to apply for his service records details here Get a copy of military service records date of birth death cert £30 is required regards Clive
Thank you Clive. He died in 1988 and I do not have a death certificate. I know something of his activities after Dunkirk it was just wondering if there's anything about the RAOC in early 1940 in France. As you can see I'm very new to this subject! I'd rather not put his name out unless I know it is in the right forum.
You can trust the forum many people use it and find out a lot of info re their families journey if you are not comfortable posting his name then apply for his death cert then apply for his services records then once you have confirmation of his regiment you can then visit The National Archives at Kew and copy the war diaries which will give you more info on his regiments service journey good luck with your research
A death certificate should be easy to obtain, they can be ordered online from £7.00, here is the site: General Register Office - Online Ordering Service - Login As Clive states, his official records, which are only available from the MOD via the link he posted, are the only way to go.
As the entire internet will then be able to read it, if you are not comfortable putting it on here, don't.
Thanks I appreciate your interest. I downloaded the archive form which apparently doesn't require the birth cert as it was too long ago, but it says there is a delay of at least a year in providing records! Which is way too long. It's not a major issue, I just wanted to verify what mum said. Maybe there's a website or book (not expensive) about the retreat from Dunkirk thst might shed light on it?
