Can anyone recommend a good battlefield guidebook for the Dunkirk area, please?

I'm thinking of visiting next year, and I'm looking for something along the lines of the "Major & Mrs Holt's Battlefield Guides". Sadly, they don't do one, but has anyone got any thoughts, please? Even if it covers more than Dunkirk itself, I'd be interested.

    Thank you.

    :)

I think there's a guide in Pen and Sword's Battlefront Europe series. They're normally pretty good. I think Osprey do one too and it will be colourful and well illustrated.

There is currently only one battlefield guide for Dunkirk and the associated area and that is the one that Tomkil mentions - You should be able to pick a copy up for under a tenor on Abebooks or Amazon. As for how good it is ...It's Ok but not brilliant and I don't believe some of the info in it to the point where I can't find the authors source so think some of the book may be based on hearsay rather than fact.

What exactly are you wanting to look at/do? I have put some threads up on some of the battles that took place around Dunkirk and there is a thread called 'Walking in the Footsteps of the BEF is OK if I say so myself ;)

Thanks for your help with this.

I'm assuming that this is the one that you're talking about: http://www.pen-and-sword.co.uk/Dunkirk/p/223/

"Dunkirk - From Disaster to Deliverance"
    by Patrick Wilson
    Imprint: Battleground
Found in: World War Two Books
    Series: Battleground Books: WWII
    Paperback

    ISBN: 9780850527018
    Published: 27 July 1999

As I said earlier, I really want a guidebook along the lines of the "Major & Mrs Holts Battlefield Guides". Is this the same type of thing, or more like a short history? if it's the latter, it's not what I want; I already have one book ("Dunkirk - Fight to the Last Man" by Hugh Sebag-Montefiore) and that will be enough, I think. If it is what I want, though, I will be able to get it through Amazon or Pen & Sword quite easily.

I've also looked at your "Walking in the Footsteps of the BEF" thread elsewhere on the site, and it's very good - well done! I've seen one of the sites you went to, that of Major Ervin-Adrews VC, but I know that there's much more to see. I'm planning to take a battlefield tour, so I guess that they'll cover most of what there is to see on that.

    Thanks again for yur help.

    :)

I don't know about Holts book - I only focus on the France and Flanders Campaign of 1940 and my interest in WW2 slowly starts to drop after 4th June 1940. I'd stick with Sebag-Montefiore's book, there's plenty of detail in it and its well researched and sourced.

    Enjoy your trip.

Sorry to hijack your thread 'The Scorer' but I'm off to Dunkirk and surrounding areas next week.

Drew - can you point me in the direction of this thread. I have probably read it before but can't find it at the moment. Cheers

No problems; I'll be interested to read about your experiences, as I'm sure that others will be as well!
