    Hi Kevin. I had an uncle at Dunkirk. He is in an old soldiers home in Canada. He was RTR [Tanks]. The boat took them to Portsmouth. He finished up in Egypt.
    A second uncle was in the 28th Jungle Field Regt, like your Dad. He was in PAI in Iraq, then India, Then Arakan. The 5th Division was air lifted from Arakan to Imphal.
    There is a good description on the web, of what those lads went through, from Kohima and Imphal, and then chasing the Japs out of India, in terrible conditions.
    Unfortunately, my uncle died of typhus just as they reached the Burma border. He was in 5/57 Battery. Do you know what Battery your Dad was in ?

    Do you know what regiment of the RTR he was with ?

    No, sorry Drew. He now has advanced Alzheimers, so no memory.

    Sorry to hear that - Have you thought about applying for his service records? They will tell you all the units he served with and where.

    I think that he has to be dead, and only the most direct family members can get the info. He has two sons who may be interested.

    The arrival of service records and War Diaries has allowed me to produce a timeline for my father in law.


    Herbert AD ‘Badgee’ Brown, 1072695, RHA, 1927 - 1954.

    NOTES:
    1912: born Hazelmere, Surrey.
    1927: joined Army at Worcester aged 15 years and 43 days, was boy trumpeter.
    1927: awarded 3rd class certificate
    1928: awarded 2nd class certificate
    1928: confirmed as trooper in K Bty, 2 Brigade RHA.
    1930: completed signals training course Catterick, confirmed as Gunner,
    1930: completed PT instructor Alexandria
    1931: designated Signals, report state he is young but a good signaller.
    1931: post to Home, report states that he is a good hockey player. 1932: promoted to Lance Bombardier, report that he has made a good start as an NCO.
    1936: completed Gunnery course Larkhill
    1936: Equitation QI Riding Instructor, Weldon, good report from CO. 1938, awarded 1st class certificate
    1938: posted to Egypt in K Bty, 2 Brigade RHA.
    1938: Very good report from Lt HOLMAN, as Battery Sergeant Major, promoted Lance Sergeant.
    Sept 1939: at the outbreak of war K Battery was the Riding Troop (now called Kings Troop) at St John’s Wood.
    Nov 1939: confirmed Battery Sergeant Major - Warrant Officer II, unit converted to K Battery, 5 RHA.
    10 Feb 1940: assigned to escort King George VI and Queen Elizabeth I as motorcycle despatch rider on their visit to inspect 5 RHA at Wotton Westonbirt.
    07 Apr 1940: posted in France with BEF, K Bty, 5 RHA.
    24 May 1940: in action with K Bty HQ at CASSEL and HONDEGHEM.
    30 May 1940: evacuated from Dunkirk and Badgee has said that he was torpedoed twice, spend 5 hours in the water and arrived in Dover. His service records show that he was in UK on 30 May 1940.
    1940: 5 RHA is located at Benfleet and Colchester. K Bty at Coggeshall and K Bty HQ at Martins Farm, Newport.

    1940: transferred as cadre to 6 RHA training regiment at Cambridge in support of the formation of new armoured divisions. 6 RHA was in the 9th Support Group in 1940 and 9th Armoured Division Group in 1942. The unit reverted to Home Forces in 1942.
    1942: to 74 Antitank Rgmt at BSM WOII, at Royal Regiment of Artillery in Cambridge,
    1943: confirmed Regimental Sergeant Major - WO I.
    1944: posted to Italy
    1944: Admin and Mines/Demolition courses, Italy
    Aug 1945: Posted to Middle East Force.
    Dec 1946: Posted to Home
    1949: posted to 81 Heavy Anti Aircraft Rgmt.
    Feb1954: posted to 623 Light AA Rgmt.
    July 1954: released from service
    Sept 1954: Letter of Appreciation
