To point out what are the adverts about "tickets now on sale" If it is not about making money it must just be about meeting costs or tying to./faceplam

Would whatever you are on about be of interest to someone here on this forum by any chance? Clearly not yourself. This place is paid for by one man, the owner, there's a thread all about it if you'd care to quit complaining long enough to find it.

And FFS learn some history. I can't even be bothered to inform you if you can't even look up the stuff on wiki I have posted. I doubt you no what http means??

And I guess you don't want to understand 'cos you have been ownd or as you will understand it someone knows more about something than you. loz and you bet you don't even look at this thread loz.

Sad little after-edits don't make you look any smarter WT ...the edit times are there for all to see.

As for the rest of it  Not worth any more of my time.

And sometimes, pleasant threads can take the most peculiar turns... Hoohum.

I can ID vehicles a bit, but Sol, Bod, & some of the 1940 chaps are better at it these days - I have gone all rusty.

Be careful of what you read from Adam. He's not much brighter than the average poodle, especially where tanks are concerned.
Sounds about right actually. I blame his drinking.
(He also sometimes refers to himself in the third person... most odd.)

Susan makes a point about revisionist history - now this can be plain wrong, or it can in fact be the truth released to public exposure overturning years of misinformation, often compounded by other authors using it as a reference, this process of truth by repetition - becomes difficult to put right, in fact it can offend when beliefs are challenged. Criticism like pain in the body is the way we know something is wrong. Training - tends towards the facts without the natural tendency to look upon your own in a favourable light. History taught to soldiers under training emphasizes the bravery, traditions and conduct of past times and rightly so. Higher up the chain the romantic views change and are replaced with making the present operations work by looking at the command problems of conflicts past. Why in 1944 was the British Army still making errors? Which cost lives, the planning of D Day still contained problems that should have been ironed out. Infantry and armour in the field still not cooperating - when battalion COs talk of training to get on and off boats and spending much time waterproofing kit yet not once training to fight in close country or liaise with armour in close cover! Doctrine the accepted armour infantry cooperation that did patchily exist changed mid battle! Criticism is tough and can be cruel on individuals - it is not done lightly if it saves lives - an offended individual is of less import. Another point which will probably offend and yet there is no intention so to do. 'I was there' this was addressed after the battle of Jutland - when ships logs and gunnery officers reports were collated - someone at the Admiralty commented that it was difficult to decide how many battles the fleet had fought - each faithfully reported their own action and after viewing by those who could put it all into perspective was used to train for future engagements. History, has to be looked at from all sides- history based on falsehoods is a disservice to the brave people who made it.

As you can probably guess I have little time for books. I do not now have the access to documents .Books I did pick up in the library were sometimes nothing short of fantasy written as they were before the more open access available now, yet some of these will still be used as reference for other books.

Your post reminded me of the Duke of Wellington.

The history of a battle, is not unlike the history of a ball. Some individuals may recollect all the little events of which the great result is the battle won or lost, but no individual can recollect the order in which, or the exact moment at which, they occurred, which makes all the difference as to their value or importance.

Susan, I am in agreement with Mark (BFBSM).
Just carry on with what you, Mark, I and many others are doing.
Welcome new members, point them in the right direction for Service records, CWGC, ICRC, POW records etc.
When you see a thread you think you can contribute to post on it. We all know a tiny piece of information can be the key to answering a query.
As Di says, put up the Diaries you have and we would all like to see your bagful of photos!

    Mike

I agree with all the above. My knowledge of ww2 is a bit thin on the ground but thanks to forum members answering my initial query about the reconnaissance corps I feel I have a lot more knowledge about them. I have also learned lots about North Africa, Sicily and Italy through reading books and the war diaries. I too posted pictures of my dad on this forum and was very surprised to see others posting the same photos of his unit. I now feel I can help others asking about the recce corps and point them in the right direction.
So my message to new members is just post away and post your pictures-you never know-someone might recognise the people in them.

    Lesley
