I inherited this helmet from my grandfather and would like to know what type it is. Thanks for any assistance you can give me.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

It looks German to me but other than that I can't help but there'll be someone along soon enough I'm sure that will be able to tell you :)

In the mean time are there any official markings/signs or numbers in or outside the helmet and do you know much about where your grandfather served etc. They may help with giving you the answers you seek ;)

I would say the Black numbers with the green back ground at the front of the helmet is for ID puposes (Probably the soldiers last 3- his Service No.) Its a common practise still used today to ID personal kit.

    Cheers

It's a Spanish Model 1942 (or "Modelo Z") with the later liner. (later meaning being introduced in.... .... 1975 !!!). It was used into the 1980's.

Its quite similar to the old Irish Army Helmet used at the beginning of the Emergency.

    Exdiago,

Welcome to the forum, where you are already learning that there are plenty of knowledgeable people to help you out.

As a matter of interest Gotthard, was it made under licence or just a straight forward copy of the German Stahlhelm I /II ?
The lining is not like the German pattern, but the helmet looks to be a clone.

    Regards

    Tom

The Irish helmet (the model28) was made by Vickers and resembled the WW1 M16 Stahlhelm if anything (the Irish Mk.II which replaced it was like the british helmet of the time). It had a Germanic 3-pad liner and an Irish badge on the front.

The Spanish helmet depicted has quite a lot of differences to the German M35 and M40 that it resembles and was made in Spain and not under license by anybody. The original Modelo Z helmets had a lining similar to that of the earlier german variety, but the one depicted was introduced in 1975 (though it wasn't widespread until 1979)

Thanks all for your input. You've all been very informative; thanks Croonaert for helping me figure out what kind of helmet I have.
