Remembering all those who lost their lives on D Day - and the Dodgers who lost their lives in the landings in Sicily, Reggio Calabria, Taranto, Salerno, Anzio....in sunny Italy.

And the prisoners of war on the six ships bringing them from camps in North Africa across to Italy - among them the Jason, the Nino Bixio and the Scillin.

And the 1000 or so prisoners of war who died behind the lines - from sickness, from friendly fire, when fighting with the partisans or as victims of war crimes - who are buried in Italian War Cemeteries or remembered on the memorials in Italy and North Africa.

And the submariners and mariners...the SAS /SBS,SOE and Popski's Private Army...the Airmen...

Agreed. While not taking anything away from D-Day, it would have been nice if other theatres had also been recognized in the ceremony yesterday.

For example, I just did a search for 6/6/44 on the CWGC website - 48 names on the Rangoon Memorial.

Not forgetting Burma. The Burma Star was awarded for service between 11 December 1941 to 2 September 1945.

Thank you everyone for your likes. I hadn't forgotten any of the others you mention, but living in Italy I decided to dedicate my comment to the Dodgers.

As I write this, Italian State Televison is broadcasting a fairly lengthy news spot on D Day Normandy. After watching the first bit I returned to the computer to add this comment.
