Displaying Dad's Medals

Do you ever have jobs on your list that never seem to rise to the top?

8 (...or maybe 9) years ago I thought it would be a good idea to mount dad's medals into some kind of display case, ...so I added this little task to my jobs list.

Last week, I stumbled upon a few display frames on Amazon. I ordered one, and here we are, finally ticked off the list!



For about £50, the frame doesn't look too bad, although I had to 'operate' on one of the spacers with a Stanley knife, as it had been stuck on rather carelessly at an angle, fouling the edge of the photograph.

I wasn't sure which 'face' of the Defence & War medals is normally displayed, but as the 'tails' side looks more interesting than the 'heads', that's what I've gone for.

Those amongst you that give-a-damn will probably notice that 2 of the ribbons are on the wrong medals.

As this was a mistake made by mum and/or dad 80 years ago, and they have been like this ever since, this error is now part of their history.

I believe it’s usually the obverse side of the medal, the sovereign’s head, that is on display, but I do agree with you that the reverse is the more attractive.

It’s a grand looking display and, from your photo, sits very well where you have it. (Took me years to get it done too)

 

Great display Steve. When the Arctic Star was introduced I was prompted to obtain all my father's unclaimed medals and mount them for display.

 

Seeing Qu1ckn1ck's medal display has got me thinking about the Defence Medal, because this is not included in his collection.

For some reason I'd thought this was automatically granted with any campaign star, but I've just been struggling to understand the official blurb & now think it may be for HAA service in the UK.

Can anyone clarify?

The blurb on the Defence medal is very confusing, it depends where he was and for how long, but i am sure that to get it with "HAA service in the UK" it would have to be for 3 years, overseas service is less. My Dad had one with his medals (not officially issued, and his service records look like he applied for it on the medal card, but it was rejected). Adding up all his overseas service in "non-combat" areas it falls a few weeks short of the criteria, so no medal.
Silly really, what was the roll of AA if not for defence???
