I too am disgusted that this was allowed to happen, and I'm sorry that those who went to the service to remember those who served and those who fell were not able to do so in a respectful environment, as I was able to do by attending a very moving and poignant service.

First 'white poppies' now this , Freedom of Expression and free speech is a two way street , It has to be respected and used sensibly , wether by 'union Jack' waiving morons or 'Koran' thumping morons , abuse this liberty and it can be taken away from all of us . there is a time and a place to put your views over , this isnt one of them . While their actions disgust me I take solace in the fact that they could only manage to get 50 people on their protest.
I agree with the sentiment, but there were only thirty of them, according to The Independent, whose arithmetic I would trust over the Mail. As for the English Defence League, if they had any brains (which they obviously don't), they should have either ignored this completely or staged a silent and peaceful protest in order that the police could actually deal with the Islamists - instead there's a picture of an EDL supporter using a loud-hailer and being led away by a police officer. As it is, they have just provided these extremists with the oxygen of publicity.

 

I went to Cribbs Causeway today, outside Boots was a RBL stand, with an ex-signaller selling poppies.

The family in front of me were Asian, they bought a poppy each - in conversation with the lady at the stand they mentioned that their grandfather fought in Burma, and that they currently had a cousin in the British Army in Afghanistan.

The 'protestors' are a minority, even within their own community - I watched white middle class 'students' abusing their right to 'protest' (you could tell they were middle class students 'cos they didnt have the wits to cover their faces...), every society has troublemakers - like the well spoken chap from the NUS said - this is their 3rd protest but the only one to grab the headlines.

The answer is to deny them publicity, they'll just fade away.

I remember Michael Foot wearing a white poppy, wasnt he in the military?

I bought a poppy and 6 wooden crosses and gave considerably more than they were being sold for. The chap said 'Thank you', to which the only reply can ever be 'No mate, thank you.'

Sapper. Because I've been brought up by my parents to show respect to my elders, I'm going to answer this in the best way that I can, hoping that you'll see that I'm speaking honestly, and without bias.

You, and others like you fought, and laid down your lives in order that today, in the 21st century, men and women, no matter what their country of birth, their politics, colour or creed, could speak out in freedom. You and your fine comrades gave birth to a new world. You and your comrades should be proud of that, and celebrate it just as you remember, anc commemorate your losses.

These people who chant anti-British slogans, who burn flags, poppies, national symbols are allowed to do so as a 'peaceful protest', because your generation freed them from the tyranny of a regime that threatened to deny us all these freedoms of speech. You should remain proud to have been a part of all this, just as we should all be proud of you and your comrades.

Don't lower yourself, or the memories of our fallen, YOUR comrades, friends and fellow pathfinders, to the same levels of these people. Feel pity for them, because they will never truly understand why they're free right now.

We know though, and WE thank you.

I'm not asking you to 'turn the other cheek' at all. Nor am I saying that because of the actions of a few idiots that 'massive revenge' should be taken forthwith. That's what they'd do, and I'm suggesting that you/we/us are better than that.
I would like to believe that somewhere, there's someone taking note of these people, finding out where they live, where they work, who they meet. I'd like to think that one fine day, these people will be quietly picked up and salted away to see just why they want to bite the hand that feeds. But, I'd also like to think that these same people, without any evidence, would be set free again, under close surveillance until such evidence is obtained that can lead to a satisfactory conviction, and deportation. If we simply did as you suggest, we're no better than they are and the memories of your comrades deserve better recognition for their sacrifices than that.

That's all I'm saying on the subject, because I have no wish to degenerate the thread into a who's right/who's wrong argument. It's wrong to do that when people are so obviously upset and angered.
