Hi all, I just saw this model on Ebay. It's a 1/16th scale (120mm) kit. I like the idea of the bowler hat and brolly but is it me or does the face look more like Urquhart??
I like the fact he has borrowed a Stick Grenade ! Adapt and overcome!! It's called "Using whatever is available" Regards Tom
who's the manufacturer? shows what I know about Arnhem, never heard of this bloke before. who was he?
Owen surely you have watched the Bridge Too Far. 'I've been meaning to ask you. Why do you always carry an umbrella with you '?
Paul (and everyone else) maybe interested to see what one talented guy has done with figure over at Armorama, in my opinion he has done a very very good job. Armorama :: Black Sheep BS120/3 Brit Para, Arnham WIP Enjoy
The chap that walks over Arnhem Bridge to take the south side but are beaten back by the MG in the pillbox.
Even old hands like Major Freddie Gough became disheartened when Mark IV Tanks crossed the Bridge and the battle seemed lost, but his gloom lifted instantly when he caught sight of Digby leading a bayonet charge against German infantry who had dared to enter British territory; carrying a pistol in one hand, madly swinging his umbrella about his head with the other, and now sporting a bowler hat on his head - which he had obtained from God knows where - doing his best to look like Charlie Chaplin. from here: Major Digby Tatham-Warter
Andy007. Great find mate, excellent pics! The guy is obviously a very fine painter indeed! I have taken the liberty of 'borrowing' one of the pics to put up here......... Owen. The figure is manufactured by a company called 'Stormtroopers'. I went on their website but it's down at the moment so I followed the links etc, etc. This version of the model is not shown for sale. They do however have the 'original' kit with Tatham-Warter wearing a beret and not carrying a brolly. £34 does sound a bit steep though for a single figure!! El Greco Miniatures
Further to sol's post: On another occasion he used the rolled up umbrella to in-effect disable a German armoured car, simply by thrusting it through an observation slit in the vehicle and incapacitating the driver. When you remember that this was Tatham-Warter's first time in combat I think he did rather well!!! Regards............
Sorry to go on about this but I still can't shake the feeling that the figure looks more like Urquhart than Tatham-Warter!! For those not familiar with the Battle of Arnhem, the first and last two pics are Tatham-Warter, the rest are Urquhart.
The chap that walks over Arnhem Bridge to take the south side but are beaten back by the MG in the pillbox. The Tatham-Warter-like character was called Major Harry Carlyle in the film, though.
The Tatham-Warter-like character was called Major Harry Carlyle in the film, though. Wasn't he the chap that carried the brollie though?
Just clicked the link: [Carlyle has asked to see Frost before he dies] Lt. Col. John Frost: Hello, Harry. Major Harry Carlyle: Hello. Johnny. Lt. Col. John Frost: You know, Harry; I always wanted to ask you but didn't because I knew you so very much wanted me to; but why do you always carry that umbrella? Major Harry Carlyle: Bad memory. Never could remember the password. Knew no Jerry would carry one. Had to prove I was an Englishman, you see.
Tatham-Warter later revealed that he carried the umbrella because he could never remember the password, and it would be quite obvious to anyone that the bloody fool carrying the umbrella could only be an Englishman. If I'm not wrong, his character die in the movie, while Tatham-Warter survived the war. Also in the movie he wore a helmet but in reality he "Choosing to wear his red beret in place of a helmet" (Major Digby Tatham-Warter). I don't understand why they change his name in the movie and "kill" him.
not sure how much it even looks like urquhart, but certainly doesn't look much like any of the pictures of tatham-warter that i have seen. 'digby' was apparently very tall, and thin and rather aristocratic looking, as well as looking much younger than the face on the figure (he was 27 at the time of market-garden). he also had a rather long face, unlike the figure. i'm trying to put together a custom 1:6 scale figure of tatham-warter, and the main obstacle has been finding a head sculpt that looks enough like him- i'll probably have to modify an existing sculpt, if i can. here are links to the photos i've been able to find of him roughly around the time of wwii- http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1hKDe3qlwWg/UZuy2ZLuWeI/AAAAAAAACQ0/Q4_TojeppXw/s1600/Digby_Tatham-Warter.jpg http://www.saxonlodge.net/showmedia.php?mediaID=590 http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/cornix/1457357/14357/14357_original.gif cheers, rob
I've just spent a pleasant hour making a Warter head. I think I can get it, in fact the bowler hat will be the hard bit to make. We'll see how it turns out and anyone who wants to go wild and get a 3d laser print can have the model. So here's the start, he hasn't been into an app to sculpt a bit of asymmetry yet but the overall shape seems okay to me.
