John Davies from The Royal Observatory, Edinburgh, said: "The space around the earth is full of lots of small pieces of debris, tiny pieces of rock that have chipped off asteroids, dust that has fallen off comets and when these things burn up in the atmosphere we see them as shooting stars.

"They happen all the time, a few every hour, but big ones are much rarer and this seems to have been a comparatively big piece.

Yes I saw it was on my way home from work when I saw a bright in a cloud, at first I thought it was a plane with a bright light on, but was going too fast, then I thought I'm seeing my first UFO [IMG] .
So I stopped the car to get a better view. Spectacular to watch with it's fiery tail, it then disintergated into a shower of multi-coloured sparks. [IMG]

The bright object seen above Norfolk on Friday night was probably ‘space junk’ rather than a meteor, according to a local astronomer.

But Diss-based Mark Thompson, presenter of the BBC programme Stargazing Live, said the fireball was probably a chunk of space debris, known as space junk.
He said that the different colours described by observers on Twitter and on the EDP website were not characteristic of a meteor, which is normally a white-ish colour.
