Hello all, My great uncle F/LT Edwin Charles Smith DFC 171721 115SQN was a recipient of the DFC. He was a member of the 115sqn Association and Air Gunner Association and worked with museums (including Bomber Command Museum) to further the memory of those men. After the war he put together a history of 115sqn Lancasters and a 115sqn Roll of Honour which are both fascinating reads. He kept just about everything from his time in service (which his son now looks after) but nobody has any information regarding how he got his DFC. I have searched TNA as best I could but am at a bit of a loss as to how to proceed. I have given the forms pertaining to aquiring service records to his family and am currently waiting on that. Has anyone got any ideas how else I can proceed with finding out how he got this medal?
Post war award while with No.514 Sqn - Nov 1945 so not immediate, more likely for services rendered. https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/37337/supplement/5396/data.pdf Citations can be found by trawling through AIR2 Ross
Hi Ross, Yes I've already seen the Gazette issue you linked to, however I didn't realise that they would award medals for that reason. Was that common for long-serving Officers? Finally AIR2, how would I start searching that as neither Ted's full name nor number comes up in a search. Thanks for your help.
AIR 2 is not catalogued by name. It's a matter of looking through all the relevant files - starting with bomber command but failing that trying Allied as well Search results: non-immediate 1945 | The National Archives and Search results: non-immediate | The National Archives note that discovery search limited to 1945 will not bring up all the relevant files Ross
Hi WycombeWanderer, I am working in memory and archives of 514 Squadron at which served your great uncle for 13 operations. Have a look to your private messages or contact me through FB page (I am one of the admins). 514 Squadron RAF
