Detailed map with German positions on Monte Cassino, dated 25 March 1944. For more detail, see: http://marketgarden1944-2014.pre-jump.nl/zoomable.html
Nijmegan We always knew WHERE they were - we also knew WHO they were - trouble was they made us fight in brigade sizes when six men could stop our lads - until we were able to get six DIVISIONS into the Liri Valley - then it was different story Cheers
I shall move this thread to the ITALY section of the forum as Cassino is NOT in NW Europe. (where it was originally posted)
A source tells me: "The date on the map is 25 Mar 44 because it was produced by HQ Fifth Army. However, it is way out of date. It shows the positions just before the Allies bombed Cassino town on 15 Mar 44 – dropping 1,100 tons of bombs in a square mile followed by 200,000 rounds of artillery ammunition, and then attacked. By 25 Mar 44, the date on the map, the Allies had secured the railway station and half of the town. They had also secured the Castle which is shown as in German hands. The Fifth Army were out of date!"
