I don`t know if this is the right place to post this...but I have a war diary, in which is written to day to day fact of the desert war, spanning 2 years. I don`t know if this is a field diary or a diary by a interested party? The writings is difficult to read & is baked up with excerpts from newspapers & maps taken from newspapers it seems...at the end it talks about an attack on Axis Airfield beyond Sirte & an escape from somewhere. Some of the diary (which is hand written on all kinds & shapes of paper) includes strange symbols, which could be code, then again it could be shorthand. Could anyone direct me to experts or museums in the UK which could both decipher the diary or let me know if its important in anyway...whatever it is, the effort & diligence taken to create such a blow by blow account is amazing & worth actually knowing the story. There is no obvious name to the diary writer that I can see, just the dates & the war, then it goes straight into the start date which is Nov 18th `41...the cover is fragile but the contents are all in tact...anybody that could help me I would greatly appreciate it.
This sounds quite a useful source for a study of Desert Warfare. It would be nice to even see a couple of pages! Dave.
A good piece of history. Did you come across it from a family member, E-Bay or was it found on a rubbish dump like much of the WW2 material?
There are plenty of good British Regimental diaries on the web. An excellent one is on the 11th Hussars.
