Desert Rat Sketchbook Author: Clifford Saber Publisher: Sketchbook Press, New York 1959 Format: Landscape A4 Pages: 188 Binding: Hardcover & cardboard box I actually did not buy it because of the text but because of the sketches and paintings of Clifford Saber. I guess that it is out of stock in the bookshops since long time... if your are lucky, then you may still find it somewhere.
And just now, I fond it as well in the internet: Clifford Saber. Desert Rat Sketch Book. 1959. Foreword. Acknowledgments. Contents. Prelude. (But I still prefer the printed version)
Don't know if anyones posted this before, but I've just found this excellent book online. Cliff Saber. Desert Rat Sketchbook. New York: Sketchbook Press. 1959.
My dad was staitioned in Libya in 1960 and here's a photo he took of the 'Lady of Gharyan'......Quoted from WIKI:.... "Just west of Gharyan, there is a primitive road to the right, which provides a bumpy trip to a derelict former Italian barracks, a relic of World War II. There is a crumbling building at the camp. Painted on the bricks of one of the walls inside the building is an enormous (c.4m by 10m) representation of a naked woman, lying on her side, American pin-up style.[7] The upper torso of the woman is shaped as an inaccurate representation of the North Africa coast, and the salient points of her anatomy are marked with names of North African towns. The "Lady of Garian" was drawn by Clifford Saber,[8] a volunteer American ambulance driver with the British 8th Army. Saber created the mural to help boost the morale of his fellow servicemen, finishing on 2 March 1943, while his unit was housed for a few days at the barracks in Gharyan". ....is it still there?
There was a thread about the lady of garian on this forum, cant find it now, though a search should find it.

I’ve just located this site, decades too late, I’m afraid. Clifford Saber was my dad’s cousin; Dad was a Marine in the Pacific in 1943. His name was Joe Basha, and if anyone is still out there who knew him or knew of him, I would so love to hear anything you might remember. I just sent a copy of the Desert Rat Sketchbook to my sister, who inherited Cliff’s artistic talent. The link to the Lady is amazing. Thank you so much— Patricia
