I have the attached service records for my Pop and was hoping for some advice on how to find out which, merchant ships he served on during WW2. After reading these forums I believe this may be very difficult? He was awarded 1939 – 45 Star, Atlantic Star, Defence Medal and War Medal. We believe he crossed the Atlantic to America at least twice and may have been part of the Russia conveys as he has the Atlantic Star and did talk about ships being covered in ice? Any help would be great, thank you.

Hello and welcome Andree,

According to the service transcription you have posted, he served on the following Merchant Navy ships:

TEMPLE ARCH official number 167384, 26th February - 10 June 1941.
UBARI official number 168504, 20th June - 26th December 1941.
UBARI official number 168504, 2nd January - 8th June 1942.
DALEWOOD official number 162534, 14th June - 1st July 1942.

You can check with ConvoyWeb to see where those ships went but also think about obtaining the official movement cards for them - they cost £3.36 for each ship downloadable from the National Archives.
To my knowledge TEMPLE ARCH did not serve in the Russian convoys during the dates your dad was recorded as being on board but certainly spent a lot of time there afterwards.

However, bear in mind this is a transcript and there are some unknown dates. His last DEMS posting was November 1944 so I would expect that he did have some other ships but they don't have a record of them.
Regards
Hugh

Dear Hugh

Thank you so much for your response and advice, I will look into ConvoyWeb and try and work out where my Pop (Grandfather) was, whilst on these ships. Thank you again. Regards Andree
