Wow! I retrieved it from my post box at 13:00. I finished it at 01:00. Probably the only book I've literally sat and read, cover to cover, in about forty years! That makes it about the second such 'read' in my entire life then. 'Nuff said' ?

I can't even begin to think about dissecting it for ye. I'd be here all night. Suffice to say, I just never felt the time passing. I stopped, to feed my creatures. Picked it back up. In between attending to my own dinner, I picked it up.

It never got exciting. There's no cliff hangers. It's not that sort of book. I just found myself very steadily, and soberly, examining every passage. Start to finish. I'd suggest this books style compares very favourably with the BBC " The World At War " documentary series. Only, it focuses on just the one, core subject.

Many, brilliant, Veteran cameo reports keep the mood rather sombre. The final conclusion seems almost mundane ~ as perhaps it it? But, the material leading up to that conclusion demonstrates the fact that that, in itself, isn't the whole story. it's just the generalisation we all recognise. The stuff behind it is the sort of thing we don't hear about, or discuss, perhaps till we've read this book.

Frankly; No matter how big ye personal library of War Diaries, Battle Memoirs and Equipment References, I don't think ye'll ever quite have that Beginning, Middle and Ending covered till ye have this book too.

Alan Allport; Thanks for this one. It's answered the questions for me, at last [IMG]

Wow, Steve, what can I say? I'm delighted that you enjoyed the book so much. In all seriousness, it's feedback from readers like yourself that makes the whole exhausting, aggravating, often tedious, and very seldom glamorous business of writing a book worthwhile. Please feel free to ask any questions you have about Demobbed (that goes for anyone, by the way); I'd be more than happy to try to answer them.

    Best wishes,

    Alan

I would guess in about six months from now, Owen.
