Many of you will be aware of the Defence Of Britain survey and some of you of the Google earth overlay of the sites that I have created. Whilst I post notifications of updates that I make to the overlay in many other forums I haven't done so here but felt that I should so here goes. You can get the file from https://www.dropbox.com/sh/v5e9iyg1n1q367r/AAB6Nxl2doJjuSKul-fLX228a?dl=0 The google earth forum is now closed for new posts so the file is now in my public dropbox. Please check regularly for updated versions.
I've just uploaded the latest version of the overlay to the GE community forum. I've changed the folder structure so types of site can now be toggled more easily, with the source now being the lowest folder level. There is now a duplicate folder at the top level where known or suspected duplicate placemarks are being put. You can turn this off by default but it's included in case some of them are not duplicates. Also included are a thousand or so DIVER LAA and HAA sites and a few hundred Barrage Balloon sites, not to mention the usual bunch of corrections and submissions from you lot.
An updated version of the kmz file is now available. The Google earth forum has now become a Google group so the usual link will redirect you to that group. It also seems that the attachment management system has changed allowing multiple uploads so the previous version is still linked in the first post. However the new kmz appears in the latest post by me NOT the first post. The new file is Extended Defence of Britain 11.kmz The direct link to the post is https://productforums.google.com/d/msg/gec-military-moderated/7yk8ijyvRwc/66b-LCxtJx8J
Drives me ever so slightly mad that I can't upload .KMZ files into 'My Places' on Google maps. 'We could not finish uploading your file.' Has been the message for months, apparently for me and many others. Come on Google, sort it out, I want to annoy my Kids by stopping to look at bits of concrete. Pocket DoB would be marvellous.

I think there's a limit of 200 points for the kmz upload in Google maps, but if you download GPSBabel you can convert kml into just about any GPS point format you fancy and pop it on your phone (assuming it has GPS and a fair bit of RAM) McBilly I've just downloaded the file from the link in my sig to test, it's all working fine.
Two sites to add: 52° 31.470'N 0° 0.659'W 52° 29.999'N 0° 3.489'W Not visited, found on GoogleEarth. And a couple of corrections: S0004759 is at 52° 33.484'N 0° 9.794'W in the little copse. S0001572 and S0004872 are duplicates. Actual site is visible between them at 52° 36.087'N 0° 3.821'E. S0001572 is the better description. (If I got out more, more of this would happen...)
Many thanks for your corrections idler. I think you are using an old version of the KMZ as the majority of these corrections have been made in the latest version. The second site you list is a new one though so well spotted. I have decided to stop using the Google forum to host the kmz file as they are no longer using updated files to update the community layer. From here on in the latest file will be available in my public dropbox folder here https://www.dropbox.com/sh/v5e9iyg1n1q367r/hS4-ddBEb_ I update this file at least once every couple of weeks. So if you find a site you think is unrecorded please download the latest version to make sure someone hasn't told me about it before.
Picked up a copy of Roger A Freeman's Britain at War in a charity shop which has a photo of a pillbox that isn't on v14.6: It was at the entrance to All Saint's Church, Fulham. View attachment Putney Bridge Pillbox (removed).kmz
As someone new to this site, and a complete computer dunce, I've tried opening the links provided without success. My PC (only 12 months old) refuses to recognise a kmz file, so what am I doing wrong? Thanks, Stephen.
Stephen, The kmz files need to be opened/imported from within GoogleEarth, so you need to have that installed first. I did hear a murmur that GoogleEarth was being superseded by an enhanced version of GoogleMaps but I haven't followed that up yet, to be honest.
Stephen, Download Google Earth (for free) here (because it are ace) : http://www.google.co.uk/intl/en_uk/earth/ Install it. KMZ & KML files will then, like Idler says, magically launch Google Earth to that location when clicked. It's a funny old program, and sometimes takes a while to get your head around it's deeper functions, but it's also a damned fine way to waste several hours. (Hmmm, I've got a super-duper new phone which runs the main GE program like a dream. I wonder if I can insert the DoB DB now, as I never managed it before...)
