Hi guys. Couple of questions if anyone could help.

According to Z Location X Survey, B flash Spotting and S Sound Ranging all became 2 Composite Battery (I think sometime between Jan-March 1942) and according to his statement of service my dad was a driver. Would that mean that he stayed a driver or would he have been trained in any of the above? I know he was in that battery when captured at Tobruk.

Also Jules found out that dad went out on one of the Winston Specials (WS10). Does anyone know where I can find out more information about which ship he would have been on? According to his service record he enlisted at 'Bonhill' on 14.11.40 (5th Field Training Regiment) and that was Dalmonach Barracks in Dumbartonshire (formerly Dalmonach Turkey-red dye works). I think he would therefore have departed from the Clyde around 29.7.41. I've tried going through Larkhill's but keep getting this incredible urge to fall asleep! That is one big book when you don't know what you're looking for!

I hope I'm not barking up the wrong tree here!

Any help would really be appreciated

    Thanks
    Sue

    Hi Sue
The records indicate that he qualified as a Driver i/c and not as a surveyor. There were dozens of vehicles in the regiment and as a mobile unit the drivers were very important in getting all the specialist kit up to just behind the front line.
There is a full list of all the vehicles in one of the War Diaries for early 1942

Thanks Alanst500, I did find that link which was really interesting showing where dad trained. Still struggling with the ship though! :(

Hi Robin, Thanks for the info on dad's hitherto unknown driving career! I've got the war diary for 4 Survey Regiment for that period so will go through it again.

    Kind regards
    Sue

I received dad's POW questionnaire from Andy yesterday and thankfully everything dad wrote in it ties up with my search. I can't thank everyone who helped me enough, it would have been a completely impossible task without you all.
It made for very emotional reading.
    Once again, thank you
