    Hi All,
How differently were these wartime deaths treated to normal deaths? with regard to death certificates, coroners and registrars, and are any such records held by the GRO?
    Thanks
    Joe

I am researching WW2 civilian deaths in Maidenhead. I have the death certificate of a Maidenhead lady, aged 57, which says she died 'due to war operations' at an LCC children's home in Sidcup, Kent (no address), 21 October 1940. I have been unable to find any bombing in Sidcup on that date. Any advice on how I can find out how this lady (a house mother) died will be appreciated.

The Commonwealth War Graves site lists civilian deaths, but perhaps not with any more information. See the attached link of a distant relative of mine as an example:

    hello RBWM

I have checked Then and Now Blitz Volume 1 for 21/10/40
Sidcup is not mentioned re raids, however it does state there were a few lone German raiders in the London area.
    Possible causes of death

    Enemy action
    Falling ordnance AA/shells etc

    might be worth contacting

I have quite a few death certs from the local area ( Newark upon Trent ) both local civilians and service personel. The ones that died at the scene of a raid come back as war operations deaths. The others that died later in hospital have a full cause listed. Service personel killed locally have a cause to accident , illness , suicide etc. The only one I found with war operations and I could not find a cause was a construction worker that died during the building of RAF Bottesford. There was no enemy action in the area so I think he may have died and not needed a post-mortem due to the nature of the death being obvious and was listed as war operations as war type work.
