I agree the records are the key. I must say though I am leaning towards Rex having had landed on D-Day. While not a handwriting expert, all entries (except original owner's)appear to be of the same hand. I can't see why the D-Day commencement of the journal would be there otherwise. The last entry prior to the July 12 'Arrived in France' was June 15. Now, if I may, just as a time filler, until records are received - my argument hinges on the fact that between these two entries Rex returned to England. If we accept wounds/injury/illness as possibilities, what other reasons (if any) would a soldier/engineer return at this time (June 16 to July 12)? Thanks again for everything. The info provided on the German soldier is appreciated. Incredible stuff...
To add even more mystery to the tale, the Volksbund lists 4 people with the surname Kuzmich, but none of them are Waffen SS members and as to the Leibstandarte, the first unit of the division to arrive in Normandy was SS Panzergrenadier Regiment 1(minus some elements) on the 28th June, whilst the rest of the division(again minus some elements) didn't start arriving until the 6th July.
That is interesting...I was going to write 'Very interesting' but then I thought of Artie Johnson from Laugh-in fame...
