One of Charles Comfort's excellent paintings. I'm reading his book 'Artist at War' at the moment, it's rather good. http://www.historymuseum.ca/cmc/exhibitions/collect/artifact/w4004046.shtml Looking at it closer you can see the ribbons of the Iron Cross and the Ostmedaille. http://www.wehrmacht-awards.com/campaign_awards/easternwintermedal/easternwintermedal.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Front_Medal This soldier had seen a bit of service. At least he died in somewhat warmer climes than he'd endured earlier in his service. I notice Gerry Chester spotted Charles Comfort actually painting in the field as mentioned in this thread from 2006. http://ww2talk.com/forums/topic/1789-battlefield-artistscartoonists/
As the dead soldier still has his dog tag, the oval shape in the painting, I assume he now lies in a marked grave here. http://ww2talk.com/forums/topic/10190-deutsche-kriegsgr%C3%A4berst%C3%A4tte-cassinoitalien/
good day owen super moderators,yesterday,08:32am.re:dead german on the hitler line-by charles comfort,an excellent painting.he must have had nerves of steel to paint in that invironment.!interesting post, regards bernar85
That's a good point, some may scoff at the idea of 'war artists' but he was right up the front , subject to shellfire, snipers, booby traps & the worst of the Italian weather the same as those doing the fighting. if anyone can get hold of a copy of his book I recommend it , a good read indeed. Especially if you have an interest in the Italian campaign .
Like the work below by Alex Colville, not dissimilar to Comfort's composition, the artist does capture a perspective the camera cannot duplicate.
