I was talking to a chap who had been awarded both these medals...is it possible to findout why he got the awards? cheers Mark.. can't be too many who got both medals can there?
You could try the on line london Gazzette! However, since the medels where awarded to different ranks then it would be possible for him to win them as he progressed up the ranks.
DCM and MM were eligible for award to all non-commissioned ranks; the DCM was in many cases for a borderline VC, the MM for lesser acts of bravery or devotion. I would also suggest the on-line London Gazette, though it is tricky to search and may not give very great detail. Richard

However the handbook on the British Army - 1943 states "DCM - To enlisted men of the Army for Gallantry in action. The DCM is awarded on the recommendation of the Commander-inChief, and carries a small pension or gratuity..." "MM - To enlisted men of the Army for individual or associated acts of bravery brought to notice by recommendation of the Commander-inChief in the field. " Also, the term Immediate used to indicate that the holder had been recommended for a VC but had been refused. You ocassionaly still see refence to someone having a "immediate ...."
The man i'm trying to find out about is called Vango...or something very similar...sorry to be so vague!
London Gazette search This link takes you to the search page Tried Vango but found nothing!!! Would need the exact surname.
Is it possible that WW2 dcms could be listed in alphabetical order?...if so it definately started with 'V'!!!lol cheers Mark
Vango: A most unusual surname for the UK - is he of foreign extraction? Perhaps just a little phonetically similar: Van Gogh? Vanquo? Do you know anything else at all about this chap that might give a clue? Richard
For WW2 MM's, there is a book (been out for a while now, might be out of print) entitled For Bravery in the Field (can't remember the author's name) which gives details (+citations?) of nearly all MM winners of WW2. dave.

Why didn't you ask him when you were talking to him? (Reminds me of the Korea and Vietnam bemeddaled vet. who I discussed the weather with!!! ) dave.
This is the thing thats bothering me I didnt but his reply was so vague..."for bravery"..he certainly didnt want to go any deeper! Mark
Mr Vango, DCM, MM has been the subject of investigation by several interested parties. It is looking like a case of 'Walter Mitty syndrome'. We shall see. Steve
I hope this finds the relevant parties, as it a reply to a very old post. I am also trying to find details of Mr Joseph Vango's MM and DCM but to no avail. His MM was in WW2 and his DCM in the Korean War. I was wondering if any other members knew anything? Regards, EoB
Very little in "For Distinguished Conduct in the Field" 1939 to 1992. A.F. Valentine Middlesex Rgt. - R.I. Vallance Fife & Forfar Yeomanry G.B. Van Der Werf R.A.S.C. - M.O. Van Hende Canadian Infantry G.W. Van Niekerk S.A.A. - E.E. Vaughan att 25 Fld Rgt. There are no further citations for surname beginning with VA,and only seven more starting with the letter V.
There's no mention of him in: Honour the Armies, Honours & Awards to the British & Dominion Armies During WW2.
