Good find Kyt. Aerial views are interesting. Jean, suspect you've have read it, but Ian Denys-Peek's "One Fourteenth of an Elephant" is an excellent, recently written book on the Thai-Burma Railway. Don't know if your Dad was involved in that but it might provide some good background info. Cheers Andy
Can anyone point me to a working link for this database. Interested in Cyril Thomas, my uncle. Thank you Lindsey

How do you access the site all i get is a page of Japanese writing. Im after information on Gunner John William Gardener Royal Artillery who died at sea 12/09/1944 On September 4, convoy HI-72 set sail from Singapore. There were two ships carrying POWs - the Rakuyo Maru with 1317 POWs and the Kachidoki Maru with 900 POWs aboard. On the 12th of September the Rakuyo Maru was torpedoed by the US submarine Sealion at around 5:00am and the Kachidoki Maru received hits from the submarine Pampanito at around 11:00pm. The Rakuyo Maru lost 1159 POWs while more than 400 perished from the Kachidoki Maru. The Japanese rescued some of the POWs from these two ships, and all were transferred to the Kibitsu Maru and taken on to Japan. None were ever taken to Formosa. The American submarines later returned to rescue a number of British and Australian POWs SOURCE : The Survivors

Sorry Guys thought Id posted the link. The only additional info seems to be the dat eof capture, and in some instances camps. The info on air crew seems to be more detailed SOURCE : Search the online database of the Far East Prisoners of War Thanks for that Phil thats great. I've found dates of capture for 20+ Portsmouth POW's. With their date of death it gives you an idea of how long they were POW's for. In some cases almost 4 years.
The source of the information is KEW. Files WO 392/23 - 26 List P.O.W. Japan and Give Name Rank No. Branch of Service. Date of Capture and date of release or date of Demise. They also give Country where they were last imprisoned which in this case is Thailand. The originals are on very thin economy paper which shows the page below. I have copies of WO392/24 and 25 and hope to copy 26 given time. 23 is Digital and can be purchased at a price!!!".
