Don't know where it is yet, Geoff. I remember local reports of the funeral it was right next to the large town cemetery, so I'll email the district council, might be there with luck. Seem to remember a Lanc. flypast - but I missed it.

    geoff

Correction, new info just in. FLt/Lt Townsend was cremated 15 April 1991. Have also found the right church now! The flypast was Tornadoes of 617 squadron. Still looking for a memorial, have a few leads....

Received a note on Dambusters from another member (DoverMarine) and this came from that after doing another search.

    Combined Cadet Force - Haberdashers

Cdt. Laura Hardman was awarded the Peter Young Trophy for best female cadet.
Monmouth School hosted a very successful CCF Presentation Evening, using the occasion to present the Bob Blake sponsored CCF awards to senior cadets from Monmouth School and Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls, before guests including distinguished senior officers and NCOs from the Army and RAF.
Mr Bob Blake, an Old Monmothian and a great supporter of the School, commissioned awards for the best RAF cadet and best male and female Army cadets. He decided to call the RAF award the ‘Flight Sergeant Bill Townsend’ trophy after his friend and fellow OM Bill Townsend, who flew a Lancaster bomber in the famous dam buster raid on the Ruhr valley dams in 1943. Bill led the final and third group of six Lancasters against the Ennepe dam. This action added the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal to his Distinguished Flying Medal.
The Trophy for the best female army cadet is called the ‘Brigadier Young’ trophy, after Brigadier Peter Young, OM. A former member of the Commandos, with whom he served with distinction in Europe and Burma in the 1939-45 war, he also served as a regimental commander in the Arab Legion. He later became an innovative head of the Military History Department at Sandhurst. Brigadier Young is most probably better known to the general public as the creator and ‘Captain-General’ of ‘The Sealed Knot’, the Civil War commemoration society.
The Trophy for the best male army cadet is called the ‘Captain Angus Buchanan’ Trophy, named after an OM who fought in the First World War and who won a VC in Mesopotamia (Iraq) in 1917. Captain Buchanan was severely wounded rescuing men under his command. During the war he was wounded three times. He was blinded, but after the war he completed a Law degree at Oxford University before he returned to Coleford to practice as a solicitor. He went on to become a respected figure in the Forest of Dean. The Angus Buchanan Recreation Field was purchased by the town in recognition of his bravery, with iron gates specially made, which incorporate the Victoria Cross.
