    Spotter,
In the scene where he's finally named after being killed, it was overdubbed as 'dinghy'. Same with the ops room scene; the codeword for the dam going was also overdubbed 'dinghy'.
If I thought there was actually any point, I'd raise merry hell with officialdom.

Surely Digger would have none, if they'd had to change it at all.

Most jaw dropping use of the N-word I've come across was up in Reading Mail Centre a few years ago.
One of the black lads there was peed off and came out with,
"This Nigger ain't doing no more work."
Several of us were left speechless for several seconds.

It appears people of black origin (sorry if thats unPC) have adopted the terminology and use it regularly. If a white person were to use it however.....

Surely this must now create a precedent for all future showings of all movies.

Although now they have banned the nursery rhyme, "BA, BA, Black Sheep" I suppose they can alter literary history whenever they choose.

What movies do you know that should now be censored on UK TV?

Although annoying, it's better to change/censor a word then ban the whole film.

Those people who did the dubbing wouldn't have been able to do so if it weren't for men like Guy Gibson.

Maybe it's my cynical side, but how many deeds of the past have been 'forgotten' (or an attempt is made to hide them) because they do not serve the present.

Has anybody read the released uncensored version of Enemy Coast Ahead ? Anybody made a comparison between the original and this one?

(BTW, the Niggier/Digger/whatever debate will go on and on - some things just need to be accepted as changing societal sensabilities. Consider the fact that the original had absolutely no swearing it at all or that there are a number of historical inaccuracies in it. The bottom line is that it is a film that merely portrays the bigger picture. If people want historical accuracy they should go and read the history books. That's where they'll learn that Nigger wasn't killed in a hit and run - the passengers were injured in the crash, Gibson wasn't the jolly nice chap as portrayed in the film, or that Wallis wasn't the bumbling egghead as portrayed, and so on.)

    Marek,

With the greatest amount of respect, I do not agree. This is PC censorship gone mad.

We do not use that term now, but it was used then.

    Where does this sanitisation end??

I have not read this version. Is it an eye opener?

With respect to your BTW. Was the dog named Nigger? Yes it was.

When my daughters see the Noddy books etc and dolls called Golliwogs they asked:

Could they say that then? My answer yes. We have come along way since those days, you could not say that now!

How do they know what the situation used to be if we start to sanitise it.

The adults of tomorrow, have to be educated today, about the mistakes of yesterday.

    Spidge,

what I'm saying is that the original film was just as sanitised for the audiences of that time. What was seen as offensive then wouldn't get a reaction now, and what was seen as OK then isn't now. Society changes. I'd rather enjoy the film for what it is - a jolly good 50s film with questionable accuracy, questionable terminology and questionable portrayals.

I'm with Marek - have the film shown with what is, after all, negligible changes, or not have the film shown at all. There isn't a third option these days. I wouldn't ask for the Black & White Minstrel Show to be repeated, even if it was acceptable at that time.

If it must be changed then change it to Digger. Dinghy is just stupid.

I agree with what you say and feel you have inadvertently supported my view. I just feel that they should not change it at all. It was made in the 50's whereas the new version will not have the name "Nigger" included.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

I've read both books and I didn't think there was any difference between the books. However, saying that, there was a 10 year gap between reading both books.
