Not sure how I feel about a re-run of a classic (if a little inaccurate) WWII programme! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-29536370
I confess that that I am a founder member of the "If it aint broke, don't fix it" cllub, The original series is priceless and unreproducable. There are many episodes still being shown on TV every week and I still get much pleasure from the perfect casting. I, for one, will not be paying good money to have my memories sullied. Ron
Look at the writer and director - Mr Bean reborn and St Trinians between them, so you know what to expect.....
Should be interesting to see, I was not a great fan of the original series. bamboo43 now ducks away for cover!
It seems a brave move to try to recreate such a classic series, and I am not sure how well it will be received. The cast list looks quite good but it will all be down to the writing and getting the 'tone' right.
Remakes, reprises or whatever you want to call them never work. Think 'Allo 'Allo and the Dambusters remake hasn't yet flown (pun totally intended). Hopefully this will be 'the exception that proves the rule'. Good cast members and I wish them well but will wait for the TV showing.....won't be wasting short-term money.
The worst bit of mis-casting is 'Yorkshire' for South-Eastern England. There'd be an outcry if they re-made 'last of the Summer Wine' on Dartmoor or filmed James Herriot in the New Forest.
Did I ever mention that Clive "They don't like it uppem !" Dunn " served in the 4th Queen's Own Hussars ? Thought I did Ron
Leave well alone. Mind you the outdoor scenes for the original series was filmed in Thetford, Norfolk, not the south coast. On the other hand, Downton Abbey is set in Yorkshire and filmed in Hampshire.
Yorkshire is a superb setting and I seem to remember the County Councils offer some sort of support to film producers. Satisfies a nice (sic) 'let's have a cuppa olde worlde' atmosphere and charm. Film locations are pretty random: beach scenes of Saving Private Ryan were filmed in Ireland....or was that The Longest Day? Who cares anyway as long as it's watchable.
I think they should also film it in those villages in Norfolk where they filmed 'The Eagle Has Landed'.....they could also get that actor chappie who played the lead German in said film and also van de lour or whatever his name was in 'A Bridge too Far'. Quite a good mixup of characters. Now.....back for another beer or three.....
If only they had filmed it in Norfolk! The village used was - from memory - Mapledurham in Berkshire. Cheers!
Incredible. Mapledurham, nowhere near Durham and Flint stone cottages in Berkshire. Don't you just love it?
