Last year I worked with my pal Dan Snow on a new series about D-Day. The BBC1 version starts next Sunday 9th June and is a two-parter. Lots of reconstruction but the director was a very clever chap and I what I have seen of it, it is superb.

Did I see Fred Walker and Roy Cadman in that clip?

I'd just seen it advertised on TV then read it here - really looking forward to it.

It looks to be a well made mini series. With regards to the 'reconstruction', even during WW2 a lot of the film footage was 'reconstructed'. Often, it was the same characters who had been involved in the 'real' episode that was being portrayed (e.g. films by Humphrey Jennings of the Crown Film Unit).

Obviously, as it is now many years after the events being portrayed the 'reconstruction' (or 're-enactment' if one prefers to call it that) have to be done by other people.

Then today (Sunday 9 June 2013) is D-Day for the first showing of the mini-series - using the term "D-Day" generically?

I feel this was a thoroughly researched and well presented two-part 'drama documentary'. The programme content was about right (from the viewpoint of the invaders). The only minor criticism I would have is that there was minimal coverage of the French civilian point of view or the German defenders.

That apart, this was an excellent mini-series. Once again, well done to Dan Snow, the BBC, all those who worked on the project and, above all, the Normandy Veterans who related their memories of one of the most difficult days in their lives.

I watched it and enjoyed it very much. I didn't see the point of the segment of Dan Snow going on exercise with todays 45 Commando but the rest was very watchable.

My thoughts entirely and I'm looking forwards to tonight's episode. The exercise bit took up a couple of minutes that could have been better spent elsewhere. I particularly liked the amazing sense of humour expressed by the Royal Hospital pals and the photos guy.

There was a terrific spread of Veterans tonight. Very humble men with detailed recollections and it was a pleasure to listen to them.

I thought it was very good, nothing I didn't already know about but it was good to see Jimmy Green (landing craft skipper) and the ex-RM Royal Hospital veterans recalling their parts in Overlord.
    Rather moving.
