D-Day 80 - an event near you

    I thought it might prove helpful if we listed what's going on around the UK and in Normandy to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day. While I'm sure the national events will receive plenty of publicity, smaller and more local events, commemorations, services, etc. may appreciate that extra bit of support.

    Here's one to get the ball rolling....

    A service will be held at a former World War Two airfield to honour US airmen who took part in D-Day.

    Saltby Airfield, near Grantham, will host the event from 10:30 to 15:00 BST on 8 June - two days after the 80th anniversary of the action.

    In 1944, Saltby was home to America's 9th Troop Carrier Command, flying paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division to Normandy:

    The event is advertised as free to attend, but tickets for the airfield access and some historical talks must be booked separately:

    Here's a few more happening in Cornwall...

    TREBAH GARDENS (The Polgwidden Embarkation Hard on the Helford River)
    Sat 1st June 9:30am - 5:00pm Trebah Military Day. Standard garden admission prices apply. The day's programme is still to be confirmed by the Royal Cornwall Branch of the Parachute Regimental Association.

    FALMOUTH
    Thurs 6th June
    11:00am Service in Kimberley Park with the laying of wreaths.
    3:00pm An 80 boat flotilla leaves Tolverne and proceeds down the Fal and ends off Gyllngvase Beach (weather permitting).
    9:15pm Lighting of the Beacon on the Beacon in Falmouth with piper & local artists.

    ANTONY HOUSE, TORPOINT
    Thurs 6th June
    1:00pm Walking Tour & Talk highlights the role of Antony & Torpoint during D Day including visit to the embarkation hard at Jupiter Point. Normal admission prices apply to non - NT members. Prior booking is essential.

    NEWQUAY
    Thurs 6th June
    8:30pm St Mawgan Military Wives Choir perform at the Huer's Hut on King Edwards Crescent. Parking at Dane Road car park.
    9:15pm Lighting of the Beacon at the Huer's Hut.

    TRURO
    Thurs 6th June
    8:00am Proclamation by the Town Crier on Boscawen Street
    11:00am Wreath Laying Ceremony at the War Memorial on Boscawen Street led by the Mayor & the Royal British Legion.
    9:00pm Short ceremony with lighting of the Beacon at High Cross outside Truro Cathedral.

    SALTASH
    Thurs 6th June
    8:45pm - 9:30pm at the Waterside Saltash will be lighting a Beacon. This event takes place not too many yards from the Landing Craft maintenance grid iron that still survives under the Tamar Bridge.
