This being the Mediterranean section, I thought I could jump in and find out about the involvemement of Cyprus in the Second World War. I have a residence permit in Cyprus as well, and spend a lot of time there during the summer months. There's a big British military presence on the island, I guess that was used by the British army in WWII to quite a large extent. The locals don't seem to pay much attention to their country's participation in the war, and even though it's a pretty small, place, it's filled with history, unfortunately not WWII history.
There was a Cypriot Mule Corps. Quite a few were taken prisoner in the Greek campaign , I believe. http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/1940/23762-indian-cypriot-muleteers-bef.html
A Mule Corps fascinating Their main function in the armed forces was transport, right? (you can't lead a good cavalry charge on a mule, so that's why I thought that)
Cypriot Mulemen served with the BEF in France 1940, when they took over the duties from Indian Mulemen who had delivered them from India Regards Andy H
Tovarisch - Hundred's of mules were used in Italy - especially around Cassino to bring supplies to forward troops - and hundreds were also killed along with their handlers Cheers
Cypriot Mulemen served with the BEF in France 1940, when they took over the duties from Indian Mulemen who had delivered them from India What was wrong with the Indian Mulemen? They had come that far, why leave All the way from India to France just on transport duty? I mean, they could've at least handled them for a bit.
