I came across a rather strange entry on CWGC - Details not available. I don't quite understand how they couldn't know unless perhaps all casualties are unidentified. ZANTE CEMETERY Country: Greece Locality: unspecified Visiting Information: Visitors should contact the British Vice Consul at 'Friendly Tours, Foskolou 5' for more detailed information. Access to the cemetery is through the garden of Mr Bonikos, the gardener. Location Information: The cemetery is not far from the town centre on Odos Kopah but it is difficult to find. No. of Identified Casualties: unavailable Google tells me that the submarine Perseus was lost close by in 1941 and a search here indicates an RAF base at Kalamaki in 1944. I'm actually trying to find out if the British were there before the Italians took over in 1941. A quick check suggests no Commonwealth formations there. Any ideas ?
The British cemetery on the Ionian island of Zakynthos (also known as Zante) is in the town. It is about 400 years old and there are graves of British infantry men and their families that date to when the British defended the islands against Napoleon's army in the early 1800's. An informative article about the graveyard and it's history can be found in the on-line ezine Zante Magazine SOURCE: WikiAnswers - Where is the British cemetery on Zakynthos Transcripts of the graves life_history_history_cemetery_ancestors.shtml
Might it be that the CWGC are acting in agents in some respect for this Cemetery? I know they do sometimes look after Graves that aren't commonwealth or WW1/WW2 if they are contracted to do so. That might explain why its on their list?
