This thread does not describe the graves of the 2 Russian POWs from WW2, who are buried in the same plot: http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/prisoners-war/40125-russian-pows-buried-cwgc-ww1-cemetery-fredrikstad-norway.html The original CWGC plot contained the graves of 18 seamen who fell at the battle of Jutland in 1916, only 7 of them identified. The Norwegian Governement erected a granite memorial to mark the graves. In 1961 a number of graves were brought into the cemetery from other small burial grounds all over Norway. The cemetery now contains a total of 82 burials of the WW1, 51 of them unidentfied. (Which miraculously makes up with my own maths and photos!) Several crewmembers from HMS "Partridge" are buried side by side, just behind the large cross. There are of course scores of these: Often the ship is named, even if the sailor was unidentified Inside the compound there is a German memorial: View attachment 64682 View attachment 64684 It's a bit puzzling, that even if the plaque describes how the bodies of the 13 German soldiers originally buried here, were exhumed in 1962 and moved to the German military cemetery in Alfaset, Oslo, their names are still engraved in the stone and phrased as if they were still buried in this plot. Note top line of stone reading "Hier ruhen dreizehn tapfere deutsche seeleute.." This would in English be "Here rest thirteen brave German seamen.." Are there other examples around the world of this? View attachment 64686 1914 - 1918 This plot of land is the gift of the Norwegian people as the resting place of the British sailors who are honoured here. This place is special because of its spaciousness and the tall trees, a park rather than a cemetery: I did this documentation job fully aware that the cemetery is a WW1 one, as I was stuck in Fredrikstad for a Saturday afternoon anyway. I was amazed at finding the two Russian POW WW2 graves here (referred to in post #1) especially since they are not mentioned in the CWGC cemetery report. On the other hand, having the CWGC data available made me realise I have sadly missed one grave: Shackell F Butcher's mate Mercantile Marine Reserve DOD 080815 So much for maths and miracles.
How many times i have been to a cemetery got home looked up all the details to go with the pictures and damn you have missed one or two. Well done Stormbird not alot i can add to your thread but i liked it. Regards Michael.
