CWGC Kohima Cemetery (India): pics of all war graves/memorials now available (4 images attached).

A recent trip to India allowed me to visit the North-Eastern sector - including both Kohima (Nagaland) and Imphal (Manipur). Whilst there, I had the opportunity to visit all 3 CWGC cemeteries and photograph all graves and memorials. I am now making these images available - FREE - to relatives and researchers (When asked, I normally suggest that a donation is made to a ''Forces Charity'' of your choice).

Images now available from CWGC Kohima Cemetery include:

    1. Images of all c1300 grave/pedestal markers.

    2. Kohima Cremation Memorial: images of all c950 names on all 12 panels.

    3. 2nd Division Memorial: images of all names on all 13 stone faces.

    4. 5th Indian Division Memorial: image of memorial itself (no names listed).

    5. Royal Berkshire Memorial: image of memorial itself (no names listed).

    6. Royal Welch Fusiliers Memorial: images of all c80 names.

    7. Dorsetshire Regiment Memorial: image of memorial itself (no names listed).

    8. Queen's Own Royal West Kent Memorial: images of all c80 names

    9. Memorial stone at base of 'Cross Of Sacrifice' - itself positioned on former tennis court - images available.

    In addition:

    a. There are 2 Victoria Cross holder's buried here: LCPL HARMAN and CAPT RANDLE. Will post separately with images of both grave markers.

    b. Punjab Regiment Memorial (located c300 yards further north of cemetery): images of all c85 names.

    c. There is a great deal of pollution in India and one can see signs of this on the grave markers/pedestals. Most suffer from, what I believe to be, some kind of sediment present in the ground water which is used on the grass. In addition, some grave markers, at both cemeteries in Imphal, appear to be covered in fine layers of soil/carbon desposits.

    d. Some of the grave markers/pedestals have recently been stolen and, in the meantime, have been replaced by temporary ones (normally black plastic covers with original details inscribed on them).

    e. My sincere ''THANKS'' to all CWGC Staff at Kohima for allowing me additional time in which to complete this assignment. note: Kohima Cemetery is not open on Sundays.

    f. My sincere ''THANKS'' to Dipta (and Staff) at Banyantours(dot)com for meeting my 'exacting' requirements of 3 internal flights, 5 hotels and 8 private car trips...and all done over a period of c7 days. Well recommended! This year would be a good one to visit these 2 areas as, for the first time since 1949, the Indian Government have removed the requirement for Tourists to apply for a ''Protected Area Permit''...normally costing c$50-250 each. This ''trial period'' runs from Jan to Dec 2011.

    g. Recommended reading: ''Road Of Bones'' by Fergal Keane and ''Burma Victory'' by David Rooney.

All above images are now available - FREE - to family members, relatives, researchers and historians. When asked, I normally suggest that you make a donation to a Forces Charity of your own choice.

Please contact me - with your requirements - via my email; nt872b(at)hotmail.com

Hi Jim, just noticed your Durham Light infantry link, my grandmothers nephew was with the 16th in Italy and died in 1943, John McDonald. As you saw earlier my mum-in-laws brother died in Burma 1944. My main interest is WW1 as both my wife and I lost relatives, I, William Connolly(Messine1917), my wife's side was another William Nance(Cambrai1917) Thanks again, regards Sean
