CWGC Imphal Cemetery (India): pics of all war graves now available.

A recent trip to India allowed me to visit the North-Eastern sector - including both Kohima (Nagaland) and Imphal (Manipur). Whilst there, I had the opportunity to visit all 3 CWGC cemeteries and photograph all graves and memorials.

Images now available from CWGC Imphal Cemetery include:

Images of all c1500 grave/pedestal markers.

There is 1 Victoria Cross holder buried here, SGT TURNER. Will post separately with image of grave marker.

    In addition:

    1. There is a great deal of pollution in India and one can see signs of this on the grave markers/pedestals. Most suffer from, what I believe to be, some kind of sediment present in the ground water which is used on the grass. In addition, some grave markers, at both cemeteries in Imphal, appear to be covered in fine layers of soil/carbon desposits.

    2. This year would be a good one to visit these 2 areas as, for the first time since 1949, the Indian Government have removed the requirement for Tourists to apply for a ''Protected Area Permit''...normally costing c$50-250 each. This ''trial period'' runs from Jan to Dec 2011.

    3. Recommended reading: ''Road Of Bones'' by Fergal Keane and ''Burma Victory'' by David Rooney.

All above images are now available - FREE - to family members, relatives, researchers and historians. When asked, I normally suggest that you make a donation to a Forces Charity of your own choice.

Please contact me - with your requirements - via my email; nt872b(at)hotmail.com

My Uncle, Gunner Frank Brooks, 13100858, 28th Jungle Field Artillery, fought in the Arakan with the 5th Division. The whole Division was airlifted to Imphal, and may have swung that battle. After chasing the Japanese back to the Burma border, he contracted typhus, and died on Nov 2nd, 1944. He is buried at Imphal War Cemetery. That was the first airlift of a whole Division, from one battle area to another, and even though the troops had not been trained for anything like that, it was completed in a few days. They even transported the Jeeps, guns and mules.
Would it be possible to see the image of his grave ? Thanks. Ken Brooks.

    'Thank You' Kyle.

Given that we have 2 CWGC cemeteries at Imphal, I assume message is relating to both the CWGC Imphal War Cemetery and the CWGC Imphal Indian Army War Cemetery. I found this on the CWGC website: https://www.cwgc.org/visit-us/find-...ails/2015300/imphal-indian-army-war-cemetery/.

Damage appears to be the result of flooding - not helped by Covid delaying repairs etc. Ironic really because during my visits the Staff told me their' biggest problem was in obtaining enough water to feed the trees/plants/grass etc. Looking at the above images, it appears that all the pedestal markers (with metal plates attached) have been removed from their' foundations.

The CWGC website is showing the same 'notice' against each cemetery:

    PLEASE NOTE
April 2024 – This cemetery has recently re-opened following a considerable period of closure. Consequently, the condition of site does not currently meet our usual standards.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause but please be assured that maintenance activities, including horticultural care and upkeep of the headstones have resumed, and considerable progress has already been made.
