Trooper C H Savin was 'absorbed' into the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry between Dec 1939 and Jan 1940 when the Regiment pretty much doubled in size. He joined A Sqn, which had originally recruited from Salisbury and Warminster and arrived in the Regiment just as it had moved to Lowdham, Nottinghamshire. He moved with the main party to Palestine in Feb 1940.

Further to earlier correspondence, our Regional Manager has now advised me that he will arrange to re-install the headstone at a lower level: effectively this means that as a temporary measure, the headstone will be re-set in the base where the break has occurred. He will also order a new headstone, which should be produced at our workshop in France, shipped to the UK and installed in approximately 3-6 months. I have asked that we be notified upon completion, so I can advise you accordingly.

As always, we are most grateful to you for bringing this to our attention.

Another casualty whose headstone is unreadable. There are many across the UK.It is a never ending job.
People see the CWGC cemeteries abroad on TV and think that they are all pristine that sadly is not the case in the UK they are far from it.

The below is for the CWGC headstones but many in the UK are private and are in a very poor state.

The legibility of headstones is key to our commemoration of the war dead, and the Commission devotes considerable time and resource on inspecting, re-engraving and, where necessary, replacing headstones.

The Commission has in place Headstone Legibility Guidance to avoid the unnecessary replacement of stone. The casualty’s name must always be legible and further details identifiable. If a headstone falls below the acceptable levels then intervention is required.

Legibility can vary according to the type of stone, the angle and depth of the incisions, the light conditions, the cleanliness and the moisture content of the stone at the time of examination.

The cleanliness of a headstone can also affect legibility, but gentle cleaning is often all that is required. Headstones are not expected to look permanently new; some soiling, marking, lichen etc. is to be expected as the stone is exposed to the elements.

In many cases, where the stone is basically sound, it is economically and environmentally good practice to re-engrave without removing the headstone. Repairs, such as stone inserts, mortar repair and re-engraving are carried out as part of the Commission’s conservation-led approach, and replacement of a headstone should be the last option.
