Thank you for your email and attached photograph.
    >
    > I would explain that information provided directly by the Military Authority at the time, as well as the Final Verification Form completed and signed by his widow Mrs Elizabeth Allan Ayres clearly shows the surname as Ayres. Althought we note that the photograph you provided show the family surname on the headstone as Ayers, I am afraid it is not sufficient enough evidence to consider an amendment to his surname. For any amendment to our records we require official documentry evidence for example his birth, and marriage certificate.

I reported this one to the CWGC on the 6th May, as it is badly worn and the inscription barely readable.

I got a reply 4 days later asking me to send photos etc.

Today, got an email from Kerry Groves saying replacement headstone on order (although it could take 18 months to be manufactured, delivered and installed).

I am quite impressed, just over 3 weeks since i notified them. Thumbs up to CWGC.

Just received E-mail confirming change of Date of Death.

    Dear Mr Deacon

Thank you for your email of 26th April 2013.
Please accept our apology for the delay of our reply. This is due to the large volume of correspondence we are currently receiving.
I would explain that when our records were scanned to form our database some errors did unfortunately occur because of the age and variable quality of the material and print. Naturally, we are keen to ensure that all such errors are corrected, however small, and I am grateful to you for drawing this to our attention. Our Records Department will amend Private M G Barker to read:
    Casualty Details
    Rank: Private

    Initials: M G
    Service No: R4/069407
    Age: 35
    Unit: 4th Base Remount Depot

I sent in a couple of anomalies from Medjez CWGC three weeks ago, but yet to receive any feedback - one was a comrade of my Dad's; hopefully this will be resolved soon (presumably a database issue)

    Headstone has incorrect initial

    From CWGC

Thank you for your email of 17th May 2013.
Please accept our apology for the delay of our reply. This is due to the large volume of correspondence we are currently receiving.
Unfortunatelly an error occured when the headstone marking the grave of Warrant Officer R J Badger was engraved. Please note that arrangments are now in place to correct the initial from B to R. We cannot say at this stage when the work will be completed, as it will have to be scheduled into the works maintenance programme.
I hope this is satisfactory and thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.

    Yours sincerely

Thank you for your e-mail of 10th July 2013 regarding the error given in the details we hold for Flying Officer Deiniol Davies.

The Commission agrees that the place name given in Flying Officer Davies' next of kin is incorrect. This was due to a transcription error.

When our records were created some errors did unfortunately occur. Naturally, we are keen to ensure that all such errors are corrected, however small, and I am grateful to you for drawing this to our attention. Flying Officer Davies' record will be amended to give his the correct place name of Tylorstown. This amendment will be made as soon as it is possible to do so.

Thank you for bringing this error to our attention.

    Yours sincerely

From the number of posts on this thread there are a lot of people advising CWGC of updates required - this is great to know that our lads are getting properly remembered. I have sent at least a dozen updates to them regarding missing Gallantry medal initials, and most were accepted and updated. The last time i was at Ypres i was glad to see my research being of use. Pte.Gardiner finally gets his DCM carved in stone on the Tyne Cot Memorial.....
This was George Gardiner 2nd Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) - KIA Hanebeek, 3rd Battle of Ypres 16/8/17. (Panel 162.) He was from Dundee.
His DCM gazetted Jan 1918 "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When his platoon was held up by hostile machine gun & rifle fire, he advanced with his Lewis gun, clearing the enemy away as he went, and working round their position, he broke down their resistance and enabled his platoon to advance once more. Later in the day he observed parties of the enemy massing to counter-attack, and immediately brought heavy and effective fire upon them, inflicting many casualties, and completely breaking up the attack. By his coolness and good judgment he very materially added to the success of the operation."
